Team USA Presents Light Project to St. Albans City Council

Team USA took part in the St. Albans City Council meeting on Monday, December 12, 2011 to share their work on the St. Albans City street lights. The majority of the work was completed last spring, but with the needs and timing of the Council required the results to be shared this week. The background work included mapping the city lights by walking and locating all street lights. Students used detailed maps and GPS units to get accurate locations. This data was uploaded onto a Google Earth file and shared. Students also researched the pros and cons of street lights, discussed cost of running the lights, conducted polls about street lights, and created alternatives to our City's current lighting scenario.

At the council meeting, Team USA presented the Google Earth map, research on street lights and shared possible solutions to reducing the cost of street lights.

The Council and general audience appreciated the effort and time put into this project. The information shared was enlightening and impressed most people in attendance. Nice job, Team USA!

Project details, photos and videos are available at Team USA - St. Albans Light Project.

News from Team Discovery

Pictured above are Discovery students illustrating with Mr. Galle via Skype and JoinMe.

Mr. Allen provided some background on this lesson:
I was talking to Mr Galle about how my students were struggling with finding and using copyright-free images, and he suggested I have my students create their o
wn. Knowing my limitations, and his amazing abilities, I asked if he'd be willing to give a lesson to my students. We decided we'd take two afternoons for him to teach; the first lesson would be to teach illustrating on paper, and the second would teach illustrating with computers.

So, Monday and Tuesday were set aside for this to happen. Unfortunately, Mr. Galle was sick Monday, but he said he could teach the lesson over the Internet. We used Skype for audio and JoinMe to capture and share his tablet screen. It went AMAZING! The students worked hard and were very proud of the illustrations they had created.

On Tuesday, December 20th, Ms. Provost's 6th grade class will be making gingerbread houses. Photos will be taken showing the different steps: making a design, listing materials needed, construction steps and tips, and finally decorating!!! Students will be writing a procedure piece after vacation.

On Wednesday, December 21st, Team Discovery is having a luncheon for all our community members.
