Red Ribbon Week

Dear Families:

Over the next two weeks we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week at St. Albans City School. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated October 23-31, in schools across the country to increase public awareness of drug abuse and to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The theme for this year is “The Best Me is Drug-Free”.

Red Ribbon week is dedicated to Federal drug enforcement agent Enrique Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing Red Ribbons to symbolize their commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America.

Our Vermont Kids Against Tobacco (VKAT) group have developed themes and activities that will be implemented during the week to promote a drug-free, smoke-free, healthy community. You can get involved at home by helping to reinforce the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and saying “No” to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

Each day during the week children and staff will support Red Ribbon Week through various activities and dressing up for theme days. Please refer to the themes listed below.

Tuesday (10/23): Kick off Red Ribbon Week – Sign pledge and hand out red ribbon stickers
Wednesday (10/24): “The Best Me is Drug-Free” – Wear Red Day
Thursday (10/25): “Put a Cap on Drugs” – Wear a hat Day
Friday (10/26): “Team up and just say No to drugs” – Wear your favorite sports team shirt day

Tuesday (10/30): “Don’t let drugs turn you inside out” – Wear clothes inside out day
Wednesday (10/31): “Be crazy without drugs” – Crazy hair day

If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the VKAT coordinators, Lori Cutting, Desiree Gunter, Wendy Trainer, or Kristen Hersey

Open House Survey Results

Dear Families,

Thank you to the many families that returned a survey. We received 57 surveys. Here is a summary of the results. If we received two similar comments, they are included.

30 surveys were from families that attended more than one SACS Open House
14 were from new families at their first SACS Open House
13 were not new families and at their first SACS Open House

Things that worked:

  • Dinner (convenient and delicious)
  • Book Fair
  • Resource Fair
  • Freedom to walk around - no rigid schedule
  • Meeting teachers and seeing student work
  • How well prepared Learning Communities were
  • Seeing students use technology and learning about Team Webpages
  • Parking attendants
Things we could improve:
  • More room for Book Fair
  • Signs and maps to direct new families
  • Having only a few grades each night so it is less crowded
  • More notices with details so people know what to plan for (maybe the Friday before)
Was this a convenient date and time:
  • 41 felt it was fine to great
  • 10 did not answer this question
  • 6 would have preferred a Friday or Weekend
Thank you for our support and feedback. We will look at this next year as we do our planning.
