Autism Month

Characteristics of Autism- Repetitive Behaviors

Repetitive Behaviors Activity: Have the class watch this video about counting to ten in German. While watching the video have students try a repetitive behavior (flapping, foot tapping, gently jumping in place).  Behaviors are meant to be used to help students learn while moving.  However, they should repeat the same behaviors the whole time.  Students: don’t let yourself get silly, or else this activity may not work!!!

Discussion:  Many people with autism have sensory sensitivity and may be overstimulated or understimulated to sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches. This sensitivity can also affect people’s balance ('vestibular' system) and body awareness ('proprioception' - knowing where our bodies are and how they are moving). Repetitive behaviour can be a way to deal with sensory sensitivity, help calm your body and support your learning.
