PHRAGMITES CONTROL IN THE SCHOOL WETLANDS
Two representatives from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife department returned to the St. Albans City School wetlands to examine the effects of previous phragmites control and to continue their work (8-20-2018). Phragmites is an invasive grass species that loves wet areas and that quickly displaces native plant species like cattails. The worker's method involved the use of targeted mild spray on each phragmites plant with the goal being to avoid impact to the local plants. Generally speaking, our school avoids sprayed plant control methods. However, in this case, the benefits of phragmites mitigation outweigh the negatives. They were extremely pleased to witness the thriving diversity of native plants in our wetlands. In 2013, when wetlands restoration became a goal for our school, the wetlands were neither diverse nor healthy.

The field across from the wetlands have been entirely taken over by phragmites
Notice the brown patch in the middle of the pictures. Those are old (dead) phragmites from years past.
The healthy school wetlands now. Very diverse. The pond in the bottom has many cattails.
