Announcements 12-8-2022

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Today (Wednesday, 11-7-2022) we had two incidents that resulted in safety drills.

The first incident happened around 10:45 when some students on the playground noticed strange people at the railyard and were concerned. We secured the building (brought all students indoors) and called the police. The police informed us that there were several agencies investigating the fire from the weekend, and that is what we saw. We were able to quickly end the securing of the building and our day went on as usual.

Around 12:45 the fire alarms went off. This was not a drill.  We successfully evacuated the building, then waited for the fire department to let us know that we could re-enter. They found the heat sensor problem, and we were able to bring students back into the building. Students and staff did get pretty wet with this evacuation. We moved as quickly and safely as possible.

Students and staff were amazing with both events. It was good to know that our safety practices are solid and our students and staff know what to do and follow the procedures well.

NEWS AND PICTURES

WALKING WEDNESDAY

At least 94 students and 15 adults (109 total) walked, biked or scootered into school on Wednesday morning. While it was rainy, it was relatively warm and pleasant. Participants got a chance to get a little exercise and enjoy each others company. Team Voyagers had the best turnout but the other 4-6 communities had good turnouts too for this time of year. Thanks to all who helped lead or who joined in on the event.  A student from Voyagers and one from Adventurers won the participant raffle for the waterbottles. Pictures of them will be in the next announcements.

DREAMERS - BROGLE

This group of students found a lot of joy in their free-play time period early on Wednesday, 12-7-2022. They played with toys in a large tub, styled hair on manikins, worked on puzzles, made gingerbread people, and played with a type of playdough.  Link to 22 Pictures.

SKIING OPPORTUNITY FOR 6TH-8TH GRADERS

Jay Peak Season’s Pass

We will have a limited number of Jay Peak Season’s Passes for students in grades 6-8. These will be useful for families that ski. Discounted equipment rentals are available. Transportation to and from the mountain is not included. Yet, for students that will have access to use this pass, we want to make it available.

Any student that would like to have access to a pass and feels they will be able to make use of it, please write a letter of request to Mr. Craib and explain how you are a Safe, Achieving, Caring member of our school community.  Mr. Craib will create the list that goes to Jay Peak. The deadline for letters of request is December 9th

LIBRARY BOOKS

Check out some of the books in our library that honor and celebrate human rights!

Martin Luther King, Jr., was one of the most influential and gifted speakers of all time. Doreen Rappaport uses quotes from some of his most beloved speeches to tell the story of his life and his work in a simple, direct way. Bryan Collier's stunning collage art combines remarkable watercolor paintings with vibrant patterns and textures. A timeline and a list of additional books and web sites help make this a standout biography of Dr. King.

When she was arrested in December 1955, her act of civil disobedience sparked the year-long Montgomery bus boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Across the city, African Americans refused to ride the public buses. This is considered the first large-scale US. demonstration against segregation. From Rosa Parks' early life through her activism and eventual honors, this fully-illustrated biography helps children understand the background and context that led Rosa Parks to fight for civil rights.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

What is Wreaths Across America?

It is a program where we honor deceased veterans by putting wreaths on their graves. Team USA is working with local Veterans groups to enhance the tradition throughout our community.  Students will be holding a ceremony on December 16th at Mt Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans, VT. This is a national event held each December.  For more information visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

Please consider supporting these efforts. Order form. Completed forms can be delivered to Team USA.

Thank you,  Team USA
