Friday Sense: Taste
Facts:
- You are born with about 10,000 taste buds, but this drops over time to about 5000 by the time you are old.
- When food tastes too spicy, it’s actually stimulating the pain receptors in your mouth and not the taste buds. So when it feels like it’s burning… it kind of is.
- Your taste buds protect you from dangerous foods. When something tastes wrong, you immediately spit it out, thus preventing it from getting to your stomach.
Mindful Practice: To fully appreciate the food we eat we need to slow down and fully taste it, notice its flavor, texture, and temperature. Think about your favorite food, describe what it feels like, how does it smell, describe the texture. Does thinking of this food make you hungry? Did it bring up happy memories?
Lucky City Card winners may get to do a special activity around taste today at lunch.
Yesterday, at lunch we tried a short mindful activity. We even challenged students in grades 4-6 to see who could be the most "mindful". The winner of this challenge was TEAM TRIUMPH! Nice job!
