PICTURES AND REPORTS
RAIDERS GOT TALENT Pictures were taken at lunch on Wednesday 1-16-2019. These were the least blurry of the lot. It was a very dark stage. LINK TO 17 PICTURES HISTORY OF THE ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL BUILDING SITE
A recent picture of St. Albans City School. Looking downhill west to Lake Champlain
Finding a suitable building site in the City of St. Albans was not that easy. The Marshall Report recommended at least 15 acres. As a reference, Taylor Park is only about 5 acres!
The school board found a couple of possible sites just outside the City line. Unfortunately, St. Albans Town voted against selling any property for a City School that was located in the Town. The search continued.
The School Board found 12 Possible “City” Building Sites for a new school.
All 12 sites were examined, and five sites were ruled out right away because they did not meet the following criteria.
The Perras Property (off from Bellows Street) was put to vote on August 8, 1967, and approved by City residents. The site was approved even though it did not meet criteria #2 and #4.
City residents were concerned about the safety of children walking to school and crossing several active railroad tracks. Not to mention it was a long walk for many City students. The City School Board promised to bus all students for as long as the school was open.
The Perras Property had 23 acres of Town land and 6 acres of City land. The school building would be built on City property. The Town agreed to have the “playing fields” on their land.
The Perras Property was in the West side of the city and accessible from both Elm and Aldis Street. The land had been deemed the best possible site for a new school. According to the architects Dore and Whittier, the site has the best drainage and is the most level. The Perras property would cost the least amount of money to prep for construction of the new school building.
Four bids were made from Construction companies to build the new school.
Three of the four companies were from Canada and one was from Burlington. Many of the larger construction companies in Burlington were committed to building IBM and were not available to work on City School. Fortunately, we are close to the Canadian border and construction bids came in from Canada.
Newton Construction Company from Sherbrooke, Quebec in Canada, put in the winning bid of $2,349,833.00 to build the St. Albans Elementary School.
