For students and families who are unable to attend- no fear! We will be handing out and going over paperwork in classes, as well. Everyone will get what they need.

ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL HISTORY

THE POSSIBILITY OF COMBINING CITY AND TOWN
SCHOOLS INTO ONE UNION SCHOOL
The Marshall Report came out in 1962, which resulted in the
St. Albans City School Board taking that “big step” toward
building a new school.
During this time the Bay School, in St. Alban’s Town, was also
in need of more space for a growing number of students.
State and local government officials were pushing for the City and
Town to form a union school.  The city needed a new school and the
Town needed a new school. Why not build one “school plant” large
enough for everyone?  The idea seemed simple enough.
There were many, many meetings discussing how the union would
happen. When unionization was put to a vote, the Town residents
voted “No”.

St. Albans City needed a new school and did not have time to try
and change the minds of people living in the Town.  They moved
ahead with their own plan by hiring an architect to design the school.

DESIGN OF THE SCHOOL St. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL BUILDING
John Dore and Whittier Architects, Inc.

Dore and Whittier worked together to design St. Albans City
Elementary School
Mr. Craib, Jack and Jackson (8th graders) were able to interview
John Dore, who is on the left in the photo.
We are sad to say Mr. Dore passed away a few months after the interview.

This is an original sketch of St. Albans City school drawn by Mr.
Whittier.
