EVENTS AND NOTICES
IMPORTANT BUSSING INFORMATION - for families
As we continue to navigate with busing and keeping schedules for SACS and SATEC, we want to remind all families of a few logistics. It is very important for students to be waiting and prepared at the bus stops. It is very difficult for the drivers to wait for students to exit their houses. We are not permitted to hold traffic for an extended time and we must be prepared for our second runs.
Please have your students at the bus stops prior to the bus arriving. Due to time restraints, the bus will leave when the last student at the stop boards. This may mean that any student not at the stop will miss the bus.
Thank you for your understanding.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE HEALTHY HEARTS FAIR
FAMILIES OF 4TH AND 8TH GRADERS
On February 8th, 4th and 8th grades will take the NAEP assessment. The links below will take you to letters that explain the expectations for that measurement.
LINK TO PARENT/GUARDIAN LETTER FOR 4TH GRADERSLINK TO PARENT/GUARDIAN LETTER FOR 8TH GRADERS What is NAEP? It is a Common Measure of Student Achievement The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only assessment that measures what U.S. students know and can do in various subjects across the nation, states, and in some urban districts. Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP has provided important information about how students are performing academically since 1969.
8TH GRADERS
BFA PARENTS NIGHT AT ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL
Preston Randall, Director of Guidance, will be coming to City School to discuss the transition from 8th to 9th grade- talking a little bit about BFA, giving an overview of the paperwork that students and families are required to fill out (academic and elective course selection), and answering any questions. For students and families who are unable to attend- no fear! We will be handing out and going over paperwork in classes, as well. Everyone will get what they need.
Tuesday, February 12th
6:00 to 7:00 PM. Location: Library |
PICTURES AND REPORTS
DREAMERS - WALSH RECESS We have had bitter cold and icy conditions in recent weeks. On Wednesday, some children found their way out onto the sledding hill. Here are a few photos of the experience. LINK TO 15 PICTURES. BACKGROUND HISTORY FOR ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL
This 1960s St. Albans City map was published in the Messenger, so students
would know which grade 1 – 4 community school they would be attending.
Where would you have gone to school in 1968, before St. Albans City School Elementary was opened?
This a map of St. Albans City. It is an updated version of the one above.
The yellow line shows the invisible boarder between City and St. Albans Town.
The current schools are circled in blue highlighter. BFA is close to the center of the City.
Remember that St. Albans Town was Central Catholic High School back in 1968. Also notice that part of Town School is in the City and part is in the Town. Their outdoor playing fields are in the Town. After Town purchased Central Catholic, they built a huge addition that was on Town land.
Now check out where St. Albans City Elementary is located. The end of the building by the playground is just a couple of feet inside the City line. All the playground and playing fields were on the 26 acres of Town land. That land was purchased from Town for $26,000. The school building was designed and planned to fit on the 7.6 acres of Perras Farmland that was purchased for $41,200.
Taylor Park is about 5 acres. If we could magically pick up City Elementary and plop it down in Taylor Park, would it fit?
The pink lines show what community school you would go to. The 4 schools are written in red, with one in each section. The red dot is where the school is located. Find your street and figure out where you would have gone to school for grades 1 – 4. Would it be a short walk or a long walk to school and home for lunch and back to school and back home at the end of the day? They did get in lots of exercise!
The green highlighter shows the train tracks that cut through St. Albans City.
The 2 black dots on the map are the Catholic schools. The dot on Fairfield Street is St. Marys’ School and the one on Elm Street is Holy Angels.
The tall building and long building were Holy Angels School. The building with the black roof was Elm Street School.
