THE ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL 50TH CELEBRATION CONTINUES INTO 2020
Over the next several weeks, the daily announcements will include pictures from 1970 and a similar picture that was taken 50 years later in 2020. These pictures are also posted on the wall outside the big gym. Can you see anything that is the same 50 years later?

THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES is found here in one of the school’s many student art display areas.  This area and another near it are set out from the second floor so that window space is made available on both sides, and so that students may “get out of traffic” while viewing displays.

INVESTIGATORS
Hopefully, many people had a chance to check out the Investigators physical map of St. Albans. Students built cardboard and paper building representing their own home or prominent St. Albans structures. These were placed on a huge brown paper map of St. Albans drawn by their teachers. The goal was to expand these students vision of their community and give them a sense of place within that community. It was a time-consuming project that the kids really got into. There was great pride in showing off their project to family member and other visitors. 12-20-2019

CULMINATING EVENT COLLABORATION BETWEEN VOYAGERS AND TRIUMPH
The two 4-6th grade learning communities, Triumph and Voyagers, worked with BFA Fine Arts instructor, Susan Palmer, to create a performance for family members and the Incredibles learning community in the large gym. The show involved interpretive dances and movement around the themes of Unity and Disunity! If you look through the pictures, then note the shirts that the students crafted to emphasize their themes.

QUESTION GAME AS A TIME FILLER

There was an unexpected 15 minute unscheduled time period in the gym for the above event. To fill that space, Susan Palmer initiated a question game involving random groups of three students who would answer any question asked of them. Example: What is the meaning of life. The three standing students would create an answer sentence one word at a time while passing the mic between them. The sentences created were inevitably kooky and hilarious.  LINK TO PICTURES

INCREDIBLES THEATER PERFORMANCE
Students from the Incredibles Learning Community also worked with Susan Palmer to create a short performance focused on unity and disunity. They all expressed a desire for numerous changes and showcased the factors they want to be changed (health care costs, pollution, destruction of wildlife and habitats etc.). Then, they spoke of the steps we can all take to bring about positive changes in a unified way, especially through voting.

STAFF FUN FRIDAY JUST BEFORE THE HOLIDAY
Our teachers and staff members are almost always focused on their work instructing and mentoring students with little time for fun and connecting with peers. To remedy this situation, there are occasional Fun Friday or Open Doors/after school-like experiences for teachers, paraeducators and other staff members. The one that took place on Friday afternoon, December 20th was well attended and appreciated. Here are a few pictures of some of the activities offered. The Unified Arts team facilitated the Fun-Friday program.

FAMILY GINGERBREAD HOUSE MAKING
Some of our younger students in Ms. Laidman's, Lawyer's and Stanton's Navigators classrooms built gingerbread houses with family members and teachers. They used graham crackers, icing combined with real glue (not edible), and various candies for decoration. The best part of the event was the joyful collaboration exhibited by children and adults working together. The project duration was relatively brief and definitely successful at fostering positive relationships between adults, children and their teachers.  LINK TO 46 PICTURES plus more pictures at this site if you can't find the one you may be looking for in the first batch

January | Beets are the "Harvest of the Month"

Happy New Year!  Perhaps you've made a resolution to eat healthier this year.  Beets are a great "secret weapon" addition to your diet, due to the lesser-known, but highly beneficial nutrients they contain.  Certain compounds in beets, such as nitrates, betalains, and betaine, can help with oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular health, and cognition.  Betalains, which give beets their bright red color, are known to provide a powerful antioxidant and inflammatory effect.  Read up on all of the ways beets can improve your health here.  The unique texture and color of beets provide a great addition to any meal.  We hope you incorporate this lovely root vegetable into your dishes this month, or any time of the year!

Vermont Harvest of the Month is a project of Green Mountain Farm-to-SchoolFood Connects, and Vital Communities.
