OUR JANUARY WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TOMORROW
PICTURES AND REPORTS
THE ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL 50TH CELEBRATION CONTINUES INTO 2020 Over the next several weeks, the daily announcements will include pictures from 1970 and a similar picture that was taken 50 years later in 2020. These pictures are also posted on the wall outside the big gym. Can you see anything that is the same 50 years later?

NEW MOVIE SCREEN AND PROJECTOR
St. Albans City School has long struggled with a small movie screen and poor sound for projected videos in the large gym. That has changed with the installation of a new system in the stage area of the large gym. There is now a new high-powered projector mounted in the area above the drama stage (safe from basketballs we hope). With the magic of current technology, it will project downwards onto a large new screen in a way that won't be blocked by people standing on the stage. Now we should be able to see and hear videos clearly in our largest public venue. In addition, we should be able to project an infinite variety of backdrops for plays onto the screen if we want to. 8th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL PRACTICE
Mr. Smith had his athletes practice controlling and passing the basketball when these pictures were taken during a practice session. LINK TO 7 PICTURES It is interesting that boys and girls basketball participation numbers in 8th grade are smaller this year than previously.
STAFF INSERVICE TRAINING On January 2nd and 3rd, the entire teaching and administrative staff gathered in the library for in-service training on the topics of equity, diversity, and trauma. Rebecca Halstrom led the first workshop on Thursday which helped staff enhance their sensitivity and awareness of people with other lived experiences and circumstances. LINK TO PICTURES of the Halstrom Workshop. Joelle van Lent led the second workshop on Friday which helped staff learn about ways of creating balance in their lives so that they can be fully effective when engaged in teaching and work on a daily basis. LINK TO PICTURES of the Van Lent workshop. Both workshops entailed much thoughtful discussion among teachers and staff members.

January | Beets are the "Harvest of the Month"
Happy New Year! Perhaps you've made a resolution to eat healthier this year. Beets are a great "secret weapon" addition to your diet, due to the lesser-known, but highly beneficial nutrients they contain. Certain compounds in beets, such as nitrates, betalains, and betaine, can help with oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular health, and cognition. Betalains, which give beets their bright red color, are known to provide a powerful antioxidant and inflammatory effect. Read up on all of the ways beets can improve your health here. The unique texture and color of beets provide a great addition to any meal. We hope you incorporate this lovely root vegetable into your dishes this month, or any time of the year!
Vermont Harvest of the Month is a project of Green Mountain Farm-to-School, Food Connects, and Vital Communities.
