OUR JANUARY WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TODAY

PICTURES AND REPORTS

WALKING WEDNESDAY 1-8-2020
This is the only Walking Wednesday scheduled for January. Come out and join your peers in a fun winter trek to school. LINK TO ROUTES AND TIMES

SAFETY DRILL
On Tuesday morning (1-7-2020), the school held a two-part safety drill. It began with a secure-the-building drill that merged into a lockdown-drill. Both parts went smoothly. An explanation of safety drills can be seen at THIS LINK.  Some form of safety drill is held monthly so that staff and students know what to do in case of an emergency.

THE ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL 50TH CELEBRATION CONTINUES INTO 2020
Over the next several weeks, the daily announcements will include pictures from 1970 and a similar picture that was taken 50 years later in 2020. These pictures are also posted on the wall outside the big gym. Can you see anything that is the same 50 years later?

TRIUMPH AND VOYAGERS SKI TRIP TO JAY PEAK
Each winter our 4-6 learning communities organize ski trips to Jay Peak. Not only are the trips fun and socially bonding, but they also provide many students with an opportunity to explore a new way of being active during wintertime. Going to Jay Peak for skiing has been a tradition at St. Albans City School for many years. Legions of our graduated students have sustained their interest in skiing as adults. Making skiing affordable for young Vermonters is part of the mission of Vermont ski resorts in exchange for having access to publically owned mountain areas.  LINK TO PICTURES

VOYAGERS
Some Voyagers retrieved the school snowshoes from storage and gave them a test while exploring the wetlands. Ms. Bashaw orchestrated the event. 1-6-2020.

January | Beets are the "Harvest of the Month"

Happy New Year!  Perhaps you've made a resolution to eat healthier this year.  Beets are a great "secret weapon" addition to your diet, due to the lesser-known, but highly beneficial nutrients they contain.  Certain compounds in beets, such as nitrates, betalains, and betaine, can help with oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular health, and cognition.  Betalains, which give beets their bright red color, are known to provide a powerful antioxidant and inflammatory effect.  Read up on all of the ways beets can improve your health here.  The unique texture and color of beets provide a great addition to any meal.  We hope you incorporate this lovely root vegetable into your dishes this month, or any time of the year!

Vermont Harvest of the Month is a project of Green Mountain Farm-to-SchoolFood Connects, and Vital Communities.
