OPERATION HAPPINESS

Thank you City School! We met our goal of 1500 food items for Operation Happiness. We collected almost 1600 items!

We will be celebrating with a popcorn party on Thursday, December 19th.

DAY OF CODE: CIRCUITS

Students learned a little about how electricity works by making circuits or testing out circuits laid out by instructors. LINK TO 11 PICTURES

DAY OF CODE: MICROBITS
LED lightboards connected to a programmable chip were attached to students' Chromebooks via their USB ports. Using code on their computers they were then able to direct the chip to make various word or light patterns. LINK TO 12 PICTURES

DAY OF CODE: SOROBAN

Groups of students built a Japanese version of an abacus (calculator), called a soroban. Guest instructors brought the wooden pieces, hardware and beads needed to assemble a simple soroban. For many children, this was their first time working with basic working tools. LINK TO 16 PICTURES

DAY OF CODE: MINECRAFT
Students built digital buildings or items in a unified world. This meant that each student could see what others were making. It was an important moment for Ms. Cameron Muscente to remind students not to damage any other person's work.  LINK TO 6 PICTURES

OPERATION HAPPINESS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
Oliver, Leon, and Dublen volunteered for Operation Happiness this past weekend, collecting donations out in the community and then sorting the non-perishable goods at the collection point. They were a big help!

DAY OF CODE: DANCE CODING
Students accessed an online coding site where they could program an animated figure to dance in sync with popular music. Speaking of popular, this was a well loved coding activity. LINK TO 23 PICTURES

DAY OF CODE: CODAPILLARS
For our youngest students, the codapillars are a very useful toy for teaching coding. Each codapillar is made up of plug-together body segments. Each segment causes the codapillar to perform a different function: turn right, turn left, flash various lights, make music or sounds, etc... The students can plan the movements of their codapillar by stringing the segments together in a specific order. It has proven a very engaging and effective technology toy. LINK TO 15 PICTURES

DAY OF CODE: 3D PRINTING TUTORIAL
A 3D printing expert based in Israel provided a tutorial to a group of students over the internet. Staff and students have been printing out complicated 3D products for several years now. However, this tutorial was aimed at taking our 3D printing to an even higher level. Students worked on an excellent learning task that the teacher, Simba, provided.  LINK TO 26 PICTURES.
