PICTURES AND NEWS

ZOOM MEETING WITH CONGRESSPERSON PETER WELCH

One of the best aspects of going to school in a small state like ours is that students can frequently meet and talk with their state representatives. On Tuesday, 1-12-2021, our older students had one of those opportunities. Their meeting with congressperson Welch took place via zoom, whereas in the past visits would have been in person.

Congressperson Welch met for 45 minutes with 7th and 8th graders from Teams Renaissance and USA. He talked about his experiences during the recent “invasion of the capital”. He planned to be back in Washington late Tuesday for Wednesday’s votes on use of the 25th amendment and on the second impeachment of President Trump. While current events took up about a quarter of the meeting, the rest of the time was spent answering a range of questions posed by students:

  • What made him want to become a congressman?

  • How did his career in politics begin and how long has he been in politics?

  • What is his workday like?

  • Could he offer advice for students interested in getting into politics?

  • What was the hardest decision he had made in his career?

  • Does he like football?

  • What are his favorite and least favorite aspects of his work?

  • What is his vision for Vermont?

  • Does he feel like he is doing a good job for Vermont?

  • What impact does his job have on his personal life?

  • Which presidents had he met in person?

His answers to the questions can be found at this link.

Welch spoke candidly about all of these issues. Because he is the only congressperson for the state of Vermont, he feels compelled to try and listen to all his constituents and then make voting decisions in their best interests. He reminded us that if we don’t like his performance (he has served 15 years so far), elections come every two years and he can be voted out of office. He intends to stay if Vermonters will have him and the work remains meaningful and stimulating.

USA DRUMMING - KELLY
7th Graders worked with Mr. Kelly on a drumming routine on Tuesday, January 12th. They had perfected the routine to the point where they were ready to be recorded shortly after these pictures were taken.  Link to 17 Pictures.

DISCOVERY 4TH GRADE BOWLING - JARVIS
Ms. Jarvis focused her P.E. Lesson of the day on how to bowl. After a 15 minute calisthenics warmup, she sat the students down and explained an array of bowling rules. Students then spent the remainder of the class period taking turns bowling or managing the bowling pins. The balls used are made of a low-weight plastic and the pins are light-weight plastic as well.
