 FRIDAY, MARCH 5th

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

March 4th, 2021

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

Today was our first day back from break, and it was so good to see everyone again. Over break we did have families that traveled out of state and others who are dealing with a positive COVID case in their home. We are so grateful to the families that have followed all of the protocols to keep our school community safe and our school open.

We would like to remind families that the state has very clear and established guidelines about travel. Travel outside the state requires either a 14-day quarantine or you may end quarantine early with a negative PCR test on or after day 7, if you don’t have any symptoms. We've attached the most current Department of Health visual for your reference.

If there is a close contact, positive case, or ill student in your home you will need to contact our school nurses so they can help you determine when your child can return to school. If you have questions about whether your student can safely attend school based on a possible contact or symptom, please wait until you are able to speak with one of the nurses before sending them to their in-person day. We will support your family with the use of our online tools (Lexia and iReady) and access to the lessons through the learning systems, SeeSaw, and Google Classroom. Please let your child’s teacher know so that we can make sure you have the tools you will need during your quarantine. We appreciate our families following this guidance so that we are able to keep the school open and our community safe.

In two weeks we will mark the 1 year anniversary of the statewide shutdown. It has been a long process, and we are so appreciative of all of your efforts to help us all remain safe and at school. Thank you all for your support as we continue to navigate this COVID year together.

Joan and Stacie

BOOKS ABOUT RESILIENCY IN OUR LIBRARY FOR YOU TO READ

Do you know what it means to be resilient?  Our school family has shown resilience in many ways this year. Think about all of the things you can do now that you couldn’t before and how much you have grown!   This month we are highlighting books that showcase resiliency for you to explore.

Dashrath Manjhi used a hammer and chisel, grit, determination, and twenty years to carve a path through the mountain separating his poor village from the nearby village with schools, markets, and a hospital. Manjhi Moves a Mountain shows how everyone can make a difference if their heart is big enough.

In 1956, one year before federal troops escorted the Little Rock 9 into Central High School, fourteen year old Jo Ann Allen was one of twelve African-American students who broke the color barrier and integrated Clinton High School in Tennessee. At first things went smoothly for the Clinton 12, but then outside agitators interfered, pitting the townspeople against one another. Uneasiness turned into anger, and even the Clinton Twelve themselves wondered if the easier thing to do would be to go back to their old school. Jo Ann--clear-eyed, practical, tolerant, and popular among both black and white students---found herself called on as the spokesperson of the group. But what about just being a regular teen? This is the heartbreaking and relatable story of her four months thrust into the national spotlight and as a trailblazer in history. Based on original research and interviews and featuring backmatter with archival materials and notes from the authors on the co-writing process.
