TRAVELERS PLANTING PROJECT - MS. SARAH

Student-teacher, Ms. Sarah, organized a well-received lesson on planting and germinating seeds. Her students got to select sunflower, bean, or Nasturtium flower seeds for their little container of potting soil. Water was added to the cups of soil and seeds before their containers were placed on the classroom window sill for the seeds to germinate. Everyone is excited to see what happens to the plants in their pots.  A few of the pictures in the linked album of 32 pictures show the students doing mental math prior to the planting lesson.

DREAMERS OWL PELLET DISSECTION - DUPONT

A new group of kindergarteners in Ms. Dupont’s classroom were introduced to scientific exploration in the form of owl pellet dissection. The very excited students got to pick apart sanitized owl pellets and match bones they found in those pellets with those shown on a page of drawings of the skeletons of common owl prey. You may ask what exactly are owl pellets? Here is what the Audubon bird website had to say.

“Because owls often swallow mice, voles, small birds, and other prey whole, their digestive system has to deal with bones, fur, and feathers. The owl’s gizzard performs a kind of sorting operation: Soft tissues pass through to be digested, while indigestible sharp and hazardous bits like bones, teeth, and fur are formed into an oval mass. They pass back up the digestive system and are regurgitated as a pellet some hours later, often while the owl is at roost.”

Many schools use owl pellets as a wonderful learning tool to spark children’s inquisitive minds.

INCREDIBLES 5th GRADE PE - JARVIS

It was a vigorous class period of movement on roller boards. When these pictures were taken, they were engaging in three distinct activities: roller board relays, run and glide slides, and roller board tag. It took considerable core, leg, and arm strength to participate fully. Regardless of fitness, the students were having a blast!  Link to 14 Pictures.

OPEN DOORS FLOOR HOCKEY WITH TEACHERS

To boost numbers and increase the joy of play, teachers were grabbed during their break for a game of floor hockey with Open Doors 7th and 8th Graders. Link to 6 Pictures.

TRAVELERS 1st GRADE ANIMAL MIMICRY PROJECT - MINCHIN, LEWIS, MS. SARAH

Wow! Mr. Lewis's class has been learning a lot about animal mimicry.  This is when animals who feel they are in danger can quickly "mimic" an animal's appearance to protect themselves.  To go along with what the kiddos have learned they got a chance to make animals that blended into the background. We had a lot of fun trying to find one another's animals afterwards.  When checking in with a few students Gwendolyn and Avery shared they learned "When animals feel like they are in danger they blend in by matching the same animal's colors or patterns."  Ellie shared "Animal mimicry is when an animal mimics another animal like a chameleon it changes color to blend in with its background." We have all had fun learning about something new and hope you enjoy seeing our hard work! 4-2-2021

HARVEST OF THE MONTH

VERMONT GOLDEN DOME BOOK AWARD - vote for your favorite books

Have you wondered what happened to the DCF Books this year?!  Well, look no further!  The Vermont Golden Dome Book Award* (formerly the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award) was created to honor excellence in children's literature. Each year since 1957, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year's nominated titles before voting.

Our SACS library has multiple copies of most of the books on this year’s list, so be sure to check them out today!  Voting takes place this spring, beginning April 30th and ending May 28th. We will have a virtual celebration to vote and discuss all of the books we have been reading this year!  Use this link to email Mrs. Levine and let her know that you would like to participate, connect, and vote for your favorite Vermont Golden Dome Book Award nominee!

GOLDEN DOME AWARD BOOKS

Here is a sampling of the 17 books on the list. Link to the full list of Golden Dome Award books and new library books to read

Leaving a possible war behind is easy, but leaving Baba, Issa, and everything Jude knows is hard. This great story is written in verse!

Through Jude’s eyes, readers see firsthand what it is to leave behind one’s beloved home and family, as many refugees do every single day. Young readers will laugh with Jude, cry with her, and root for her every step of the way. A beautiful, powerful, and important book for all readers.

Runaway sisters Viji and Rukku quickly discover life on the streets is dangerous. Fortunately, the girls find shelter - and friendship - on an abandoned bridge that’s also the hideout of Muthi and Arul. Making a living scavenging the city's trash heaps is the pits, but the kids are now the bosses of themselves, no longer dependent on untrustworthy adults. When illness strikes, Viji must decide whether to risk seeking help from strangers or to keep holding on to their fragile, hard-fought freedom.

If you have ever looked up at the night sky and wondered: What does it all mean? How does it all work? And what is my place in the universe? Astrophysics for Young People in a Hurry will give you a basic knowledge of the major ideas and discoveries that help scientists think about the universe. If I’ve succeeded, you’ll be able to stun your parents at the dinner table, impress your teachers, and stare up at the stars on cloudless nights with a deeper sense of both understanding and wonder.
