St. Albans City School COVID Update

April 1, 2021

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

Today we received information indicating that a member of our school community has tested positive for COVID 19. As part of our Health and Safety measures and in consultation with the Department of Health, we are having our students and staff in the affected class/es and other students and staff in the school who are considered a close contact move to a remote learning platform until all quarantining requirements have been met.

All staff and students who are involved have been notified via a phone call or direct conversation.  If you have not been contacted you or your children are not a close contact and you do not need to quarantine at this time.

We encourage all staff, students, and families to follow all the necessary COVID guidelines (wearing masks, staying home when sick, physical distancing, and handwashing) and communicate with one of our nurses if you or your children might have symptoms or have tested positive with COVID-19.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support.

Thank You

Joan

PICTURES

7th & 8th GRADE OPEN DOORS FLOOR HOCKEY

Here are 21 pictures from floor hockey play on Thursday, April 1st.

USA 7TH GRADE HOW TO MAKE A WINNING ARGUMENT

Students were very animated by what their teacher, Ms. Moore, had to say. She explained strategies for how to develop a compelling case for their point of view. The example she used for instruction was one many of us are familiar with in our homes. Should your family acquire a dog or cat? If so, how could students go about presenting their arguments for these pets to their parents? The students then had to find their own topic of interest and had to be able to make their own compelling cases for their points of view.  Link to 5 Pictures.

APRIL FOOLS DAY SNOWY WEATHER

Two of the teachers at a check-in station looked out at the wintery weather on Thursday morning, April 1st. With the warmer weather of the last two weeks, we had all hoped that warmer days were here to stay. Temporarily not so.

NAVIGATORS PRE-K - EMMONS

This little group of students were rotating through a variety of stations early on the school morning of April 1st. Ms. Emmons had students place bean seeds in a zip lock plastic bag with a moistened paper towel. These bags were then taped to the window where the germination process would be visible to all people in the room. The students pretended to cook, made buzzards with colored-paper pieces, or played with various construction blocks and pieces. Link to 17 Pictures.

SPRING SPORTS MEETING WITH FAMILIES ON ZOOM

HARVEST OF THE MONTH

VERMONT GOLDEN DOME BOOK AWARD - vote for your favorite books

Have you wondered what happened to the DCF Books this year?!  Well, look no further!  The Vermont Golden Dome Book Award* (formerly the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award) was created to honor excellence in children's literature. Each year since 1957, Vermont students in grades four through eight have selected their favorite book from a list of nominees. It is recommended that students read at least five of the year's nominated titles before voting.

Our SACS library has multiple copies of most of the books on this year’s list, so be sure to check them out today!  Voting takes place this spring, beginning April 30th and ending May 28th. We will have a virtual celebration to vote and discuss all of the books we have been reading this year!  Use this link to email Mrs. Levine and let her know that you would like to participate, connect, and vote for your favorite Vermont Golden Dome Book Award nominee!

GOLDEN DOME AWARD BOOKS

Here is a sampling of the 17 books on the list. Link to the full list of Golden Dome Award books and new library books to read

Leaving a possible war behind is easy, but leaving Baba, Issa, and everything Jude knows is hard. This great story is written in verse!

Through Jude’s eyes, readers see firsthand what it is to leave behind one’s beloved home and family, as many refugees do every single day. Young readers will laugh with Jude, cry with her, and root for her every step of the way. A beautiful, powerful, and important book for all readers.

Runaway sisters Viji and Rukku quickly discover life on the streets is dangerous. Fortunately, the girls find shelter - and friendship - on an abandoned bridge that’s also the hideout of Muthi and Arul. Making a living scavenging the city's trash heaps is the pits, but the kids are now the bosses of themselves, no longer dependent on untrustworthy adults. When illness strikes, Viji must decide whether to risk seeking help from strangers or to keep holding on to their fragile, hard-fought freedom.

If you have ever looked up at the night sky and wondered: What does it all mean? How does it all work? And what is my place in the universe? Astrophysics for Young People in a Hurry will give you a basic knowledge of the major ideas and discoveries that help scientists think about the universe. If I’ve succeeded, you’ll be able to stun your parents at the dinner table, impress your teachers, and stare up at the stars on cloudless nights with a deeper sense of both understanding and wonder.

LAST CALL FOR 8TH GRADER BABY PICTURES

The yearbook committee is nearly finished organizing the baby picture section of the yearbook. For the 2/3rds of the 8th graders who have not yet submitted a picture, this week is your final opportunity to do so. It is best if you submit digital copies of your pictures to Mr. Craib at mcraib@maplerun.org. If you need to bring in the original image for scanning, you can give it to your teacher who will pass it on to Mr. Craib. The picture will be scanned as soon as it is received and immediately returned safely to the student.
