7TH GRADE CROSS COUNTRY SKI LESSONS AT ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL

This school year, the Catamount Ski Association reached out to a number of schools around the state to introduce cross country skiing to students. Cross country skiing is a great life-time fitness activity and sport appropriate for people who live in winter climates like our own. Unfortunately, few Vermonters are familiar with the activity and our students generally don’t consider participation until they move on to Bellows Free Academy, if then. We chose to introduce our 7th graders to cross country skiing with the help of a representative from the ski association, Asha, who kindly brought enough boots, skis and poles with her to instruct 20 students at a time. She plans to come to St. Albans City School one day a week through January and February.

The pictures below came from Team USA’s two 7th grade learning pods as they were instructed separately. Tomorrow pictures from the Renaissance 7th grade learning pods will be added to the announcements. These images show students getting fitted with boots, learning how to connect the boots to the skis, gliding on flat areas, stepping up hills etc. Not all students got to try the skis on Thursday as a few more permission/waiver forms were needed. By Thursday this week every interested student should have a chance to test the sport out.

The goal of the Catamount ski association is to show that cross country skiing can be fun and worthwhile. Like all activities, the more you do it, the better you get and the more enjoyment you can derive from it.
