Announcements 1-19-2022

FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND YOUR SCHOOL NURSES

Please help us stay open. To date we have had several members of our school community come to school while they waited for the results of a PCR test. Please realize that if you took a PCR test, you must remain at home until you have the results. In the two days that it takes to get the results, many others can be exposed. If we all take these precautions, we can keep our school open. Thank you.

NOTIFICATION FOR CLOSE CONTACTS

A reminder to parents and guardians that if your student is found to be a close contact of someone in our school community who has tested positive you will get the notification through email. Please make sure that your current email is on file with our school. If you want to update your email address please click here

INVESTIGATORS 2ND GRADE READ-ALOUD - LEVINE

Our librarian, Ms. Levine, loves to read books aloud to students throughout the school. When these photographs were taken, she was visiting the Investigators’ 2nd-grade classroom and reading them a book about a talented young rock climber. Ms. Levine always makes her read alouds very interactive, where she constantly communicates with the audience of students. She also constantly helps young students think about and learn new vocabulary words along the way. Although a lot of learning happens during each of her classes, Ms. Levine manages her instruction process in a way that feels like fun rather than work. During this session, her students were clearly having a great time being apart of the illuminating reading experience. 1-11-2022

7TH GRADE CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Once again, Asha DiMatteo-LePape, from the Catamount Ski Association came to St. Albans City School to provide skiing lessons to the 7th graders. On Thursday 1-12-2022, it was warmer and less windy than previously although students had to contend with icy conditions. Ms. Dimatteo-LePape will be coming to the school for lessons each Thursday through February.

Cute 2-minute-and-50-second video of Ms. Dupont’s kindergarten students dancing to music.

The movement activity was followed by a calming breathing session before moving on to other activities.

8TH GRADERS WILL SELECT BFA COURSES FOR NEXT YEAR

On January 20th, the BFA guidance office is coming to our 8th graders and they will be given their course selection sheets to take home and fill out.

BFA would like them back by the end of January. Students can hand them to their teachers or to Ms. Desiree Stevens at the front desk.

Check out this video recorded with Screencastify for 9th grade enrollment: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/eVRoovjFBiYSbg3YEEWj

Please note that offerings for Readers/writers workshop and Algebra have changed to grade level or accelerated only.

MESSAGE FOR 7TH & 8TH GRADE FAMILIES

On Friday, January 21st Amy Brewer is coming to City School. She is the Coordinator for the Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition and Health Educator at Northwestern Medical Center. She will talk with our 7th and 8th grade students about tobacco products and more specifically vaping. In health classes we have started to talk about tobacco and other drugs. Students are learning to identify harmful effects of different substances. We are very fortunate to have Amy speak with our students.

SNOWSHOES

We now have enough snow to use the snowshoes. They are located in the Team Discovery entrance way (near the snow tube shed).

Here is how to use them. Short video created by the Investigators.

Things to know:

  • A class might want to use the snowshoes for a special outside time period.

  • It takes quite awhile to get everyone buckled into their snow shoes.

  • Do not walk with the snowshoes on concrete. Only walk in them on snow.

  • Put them gently back in the tubs when done.

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING FROM OUR LIBRARY

Have you set a goal for yourself in the new year?  January is a great time to make a resolution and this month we will be highlighting books in our library that focus on goal setting and growth.

A long time ago in China there was a boy named Ping who loved flowers. Anything he planted burst into bloom.

The Emperor loved flowers too. When it was time to choose an heir, he gave a flower seed to each child in the kingdom. "Whoever can show me their best in a year's time," he proclaimed, "shall succeed me to the throne!"

Ping plants his seed and tends it every day. But month after month passes, and nothing grows. When spring comes, Ping must go to the Emperor with nothing but an empty pot.

Grace loves to act out stories. When her school decides to do "Peter Pan", Grace longs to play Peter, but classmates say that Peter was a boy, and besides, he wasn't black. But her mum says she can do anything if she puts her mind to it.

Ruby is unlike most little girls in old China. Instead of aspiring to get married, Ruby is determined to attend university when she grows up, just like the boys in her family. Based upon the inspirational story of the author's grandmother and accompanied by richly detailed illustrations, Ruby's Wish is an engaging portrait of a young girl who's full of ambition and the family who rewards her hard work and courage.
