PICTURES BELOW ARE REPEATED FROM OUR SNOW DAY LAST WEEK CAR EXPERIMENTATION Both USA and Renaissance students are in the car building and testing phase of their research project. They are testing theories for why their cars do or don’t work well and they are making modifications to bring about performance improvements. All along the way, they are being careful to document their thinking and results. A few photos from 7th graders on Team USA A few photos from 8th graders on Team Renaissance TEAM DISCOVERY - WINTER OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY With the arrival and opening of the Winter Olympics in China on Friday, February 4th, Team Discovery decided to join in and hold their own opening ceremony celebration. Students worked together to make their own country flags and then they walked in their community’s unique opening ceremony out in front of the school. MAPLE RUN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENT ZOOM NIGHT VAPE PRODUCTS AND THEIR IMPACT 6:00pm Thursday, February 10th With Amy Brewer Vaping products come in many forms and still in many flavors. They are being successfully marketed to children, and are unfortunately fairly widely used by children. To learn more about these products and their impacts on our children, The Maple Run Unified School District is hosting a Zoom event with Amy Brewer, Health Educator, Northwestern Medical Center, and Coordinator, Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition. Amy will share what the products look like, how children get access, and most importantly, the impacts on their developing brains. Please join us for a Maple Run Unified School District Parent Zoom Night. The event is 6:00pm Thursday, February 10th. 8TH GRADE BABY PICTURES The yearbook committee is collecting baby pictures from 8th graders. Please find a picture to have posted in this year’s book. If you don’t have one from the first year of life, then consider turning in one from the first six years or so (example - as a kindergarten student). We would like a "baby-picture" from every 8th grader. Digital copies can be sent directly to Mr. Craib at mcraib@maplerun.org If you want to bring in a hard-copy photo you can give it to your teacher. Mr. Craib will scan the photo immediately and return it to you the day you bring it in. The picture below is of a student from a previous 8th-grade group in the last few years. |

BLACK HISTORY MONTH Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Check out these books from our library today! Here is a link to our online library catalog to access these texts, place holds, and see what’s available in our school library. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good. They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world. In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career.  Karina Chopra would have never imagined becoming friends with the boy next door--after all, they've avoided each other for years and she assumes Chris is just like the boys he hangs out with, who she labels a pack of hyenas. Then Karina's grandfather starts tutoring Chris, and she discovers he's actually a nice, funny kid. But one afternoon something unimaginable happens--the three of them are assaulted by a stranger who targets Indian-American Karina and her grandfather because of how they look. Her grandfather is gravely injured and Karina and Chris vow not to let hate win. When Karina posts a few photos related to the attack on social media, they quickly attract attention, and before long her #CountMeIn post--"What does an American look like? #immigrants #WeBelong #IamAmerican #HateHasNoHomeHere"--goes viral and a diverse population begin to add their own photos. Then, when Papa is finally on the road to recovery, Karina uses her newfound social media reach to help celebrate both his homecoming and a community coming together.  Long before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, Ella Baker worked to lift others up by fighting racial injustice and empowering poor African Americans to stand up for their rights. Her dedication and grassroots work in many communities made her a valuable ally for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she has been ranked as one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement. In the 1960s she worked to register voters and organize sit-ins, and she became a teacher and mentor to many young activists. Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie’s powerful pictures pair with Patricia Hruby Powell’s poignant words to paint a vivid portrait of the fight for the freedom of the human spirit. |
