SPECIAL 100TH DAY CELEBRATIONS

This was the first day in a long time that all age groups were in attendance at the 100th school day mark in the school year. Each classroom chose their own way to mark the special day. Below are samples of ways in which teams or the school made note of the occasion.

RECEIVING FOOD IN A CAFETERIA LINE INSTEAD OF HAVING FOOD DELIVERED

Learning communities were spread out in time between 11:00am and 12:30pm so that they could safely walk through one of three cafeteria serving lines. It has been two years since students had a chance to experience what that was like. Meals were still eaten back in their classrooms. Link to 23 Pictures.

A student in Ms. Lawyer’s classroom received help from art teacher, Ms. Martinson. The student wanted to make a sign thanking the principal for orchestrating the cafeteria serving line experience.

100 YEAR OLDS IN MS. DUPONT’S KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM

Ms. Dupont took photos of her students using an app called Aging Booth. This program used digital magic to age her students to look like they were “100 years old". The purpose was to provide another source of fun on the 100th day of school.  Here is a Link to the 9 Pictures taken showing what the students looked like.

100 DAY SIGNS & PAINTINGS ALL OVER THE SCHOOL

These numbers were colored primarily by PreK/K students. A few 4th graders assisted with the last of the 6-foot-tall panels.

The numbers are displayed in the atrium next to the cafeteria.

POPCORN

Popcorn for every classroom made by Ms. Wendy Trainer.

2022 RAIDERS NVAC CHEER ROUTINE

One of the students on the cheer team kindly shared a video clip of the team’s performance on Saturday, February 5th.  Link to a 2-minute long video.

PARKING LOT SNOW MOUNTAINS OFF-LIMITS

As tempting as it may be, we ask that everyone stay off the snow mountains. It is a safety issue in multiple ways. Please snowshoe, sled and play in the snow in other ways. Thank you.

MAPLE RUN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENT ZOOM NIGHT

VAPE PRODUCTS AND THEIR IMPACT

6:00pm Thursday, February 10th

With Amy Brewer

Vaping products come in many forms and still in many flavors. They are being successfully marketed to children, and are unfortunately fairly widely used by children. To learn more about these products and their impacts on our children, The Maple Run Unified School District is hosting a Zoom event with Amy Brewer, Health Educator, Northwestern Medical Center, and Coordinator, Franklin Grand Isle Tobacco Prevention Coalition.

Amy will share what the products look like, how children get access, and most importantly, the impacts on their developing brains.

Please join us for a Maple Run Unified School District Parent Zoom Night. The event is 6:00pm Thursday, February 10th. If you would like an invitation with the Zoom link, please submit a request here. Your invitation will be mailed to you on the morning of the 10th.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.  Check out these books from our library today!

Viola Desmond was one brave woman! Now come on here, listen in close and I’ll tell you why …

I
n Nova Scotia, in 1946, an usher in a movie theater told Viola Desmond to move from her main floor seat up to the balcony. She refused to budge. Viola knew she was being asked to move because she was black. In no time at all, the police arrived and took Viola to jail. The next day she was charged and fined, but she vowed to continue her struggle against such unfair rules.

Viola’s determination gave strength and inspiration to her community at the time. She is an unsung hero of one of Canada’s oldest and most established black communities. Like Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, who many years later, in 1955, refused to give up their bus seats in Alabama, Desmond’s act of refusal awakened people to the unacceptable nature of racism and began the process of bringing an end to racial segregation in Canada.

Eight-year-old Ava Murray wants to know why there’s a difference between the warm, friendly Bronx neighborhood filled with music and art in which she lives and the Bronx she sees in news stories on TV and on the Internet. When her mother explains that the power of stories lies in the hands of those who write them, Ava decides to become a journalist.

I Can Write the World follows Ava as she explores her vibrant South Bronx neighborhood - buildings whose walls boast gorgeous murals of historical figures as well as intricate, colorful street art, the dozens of different languages and dialects coming from the mouths of passersby, the many types of music coming out of neighbors’ windows and passing cars. In reporting how the music and art and culture of her neighborhood reflect the diversity of the people of New York City, Ava shows the world as she sees it, revealing to children the power of their own voice.

March is a vivid first-hand account of John Lewis' lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Rooted in Lewis' personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.

Book One spans John Lewis' youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr., the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and their battle to tear down segregation through nonviolent lunch counter sit-ins, building to a stunning climax on the steps of City Hall.
