Highlighting Unified Arts at SACs!

St Albans City School has an amazing Unified Arts team filled with opportunities for students in all grades to learn and experience physical education, art, music, STEAM, and Health. We are excited to use the Daily Announcements to highlight Unified Arts activities at our school.

So without further ado, let us introduce our second Unified Arts teacher:

UNIFIED ARTS MUSIC TEACHER

MS. CATHY CAMERON MUSCENTE

Hi! My name is Cathy Cameron-Muscente and I am a music educator at SACs.  I am currently in my 22nd year of teaching here at City School. I have taught all grade levels Prek-8th here at one point or another. This year I am teaching PreK-3, one 4th grade class, guitar/ bass guitar lessons, and 4th-8th Chorus.  This year I currently visit classrooms on a weekly basis. I love that I get to work with so many amazing students and staff.  I have many goals during my visits which include: singing together, learning to move to music, playing a variety of instruments, learning to read and write music, and most of all having fun learning through games and many activities.  City School is the third school I have taught at during my career. I will be finishing my 36th year of teaching in June. My favorite part about teaching music is that I get to have fun creating and playing music with students.

My band, the Smokey Newfield Project, playing here at

City School with guests, Zach Kelly and Alex Charpentier.

Things you might not know about me:

  • My favorite color is green.

  • My favorite snack food is popcorn.

  • I have three wonderful adult children and four amazing grandchildren ( ages 16, 11, 7, and 2)

  • I love to travel and learn about different cultures and places.

  • I love to read mysteries and build and play in Minecraft.

  • I play in a band called the Smokey Newfield Project. I play guitar, electric bass, trumpet, and mandolin.

I typically do different activities with each of the grade levels I work with, although sometimes the themes and topics overlap.

During music class last week in several learning communities, we worked on many things. We read the book, Every Little Thing, by Cedella Marley. Next, we listened to the song “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. We learned that this song is in the reggae style. After listening to it, we practiced the chorus and then learned to do sign language to the song. In this lesson we utilized our skills of listening, identifying styles of music, and actively participated in using sign language to interpret a song.

After we did that part of the lesson, we continued to work on reading and performing short rhythms. This is a skill that is important to set up understanding notation in music. The activity, Who Sent Me a Letter, let us practice our reading skills, in a fun game setting. Link to 21 Pictures from the Investigators' classroom.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book 2019 Selection

Meet Raye Montague—the hidden mastermind who made waves in the U.S. Navy!

After touring a German submarine in the early 1940s, young Raye set her sights on becoming an engineer. Little did she know sexism and racial inequality would challenge that dream every step of the way, even keeping her greatest career accomplishment a secret for decades. Through it all, the gifted mathematician persisted—finally gaining her well-deserved title in history: a pioneer who changed the course of ship design forever.

The famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is the 23rd hero in the New York Times bestselling picture book biography series from Brad Meltzer and Christopher Eliopoulos

This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of an icon in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This book features Frida Kahlo, the renowned Mexican painter and activist. After surviving a bus crash, she made her mark in art history for her unique way of looking at the world and integrating her own image and life into her paintings.

They had the right stuff. They defied the prejudices of the time. And they blazed a trail for generations of women to follow.

What does it take to be an astronaut? Excellence at flying, courage, intelligence, resistance to stress, top physical shape — any checklist would include these. But when America created NASA in 1958, there was another unspoken rule: you had to be a man. Here is the tale of thirteen women who proved that they were not only as tough as the toughest man but also brave enough to challenge the government. They were blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and the scrawled note of one of the most powerful men in Washington. But even though the Mercury 13 women did not make it into space, they did not lose, for their example empowered young women to take their place in the sky, piloting jets and commanding space capsules. ALMOST ASTRONAUTS is the story of thirteen true pioneers of the space age.
