TASTING MAPLE SYRUP AT THE SUGAR SHACK - ADVENTURERS FARRELL

Mr. Hoben and Mr. Deslauriers are back to introducing our youngest students to the process of making maple syrup. In this case, Ms. Farrell’s students came by to see the water evaporated out of the maple sap with the end product being maple syrup. Pairs of students stepped into the shack to witness the process and then immediately afterward they tasted small samples of the syrup. Delicious!  Link to 22 Pictures.

VOYAGERS COOKING WITH CAVALLO

This batch of Voyagers had a special opportunity to cook with the principal, Ms. Joan Cavallo - a professional cook in a former life. They made some tasty Fillittos (Filo dough stuffed with a quinoa, cheese, vegetable, and spice mix) and some excellent little desserts with apples and berries. The students and staff involved had a blast during the fast-paced activity. Link to 60 Pictures.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

This is how history should be told to kids—with photos, illustrations, and captivating storytelling.

From Newbery Honor medalist Susan Campbell Bartoletti and in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in America comes to the page-turning, stunningly illustrated, and tirelessly researched story of the little-known DC Women’s March of 1913.

Bartoletti spins a story like few others—deftly taking readers by the hand and introducing them to suffragists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. Paul and Burns met in a London jail and fought their way through hunger strikes, jail time, and much more to win a long, difficult victory for America and its women.

Includes extensive back matter and dozens of archival images to evoke the time period between 1909 and 1920.

A great classroom and bedtime read-aloud, Mae Among the Stars is the perfect book for young readers who have big dreams and even bigger hearts.

When Little Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering.

She wanted to be an astronaut.

Her mom told her, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.”

Little Mae’s curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents' encouraging words, paved the way for her incredible success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space.

This book will inspire other young girls to reach for the stars, aspire for the impossible, and to persist with childlike imagination.

A story about the fight for equal rights in America's favorite arena: the baseball field!

Every boy in the neighborhood knows Katy Gordon is their best pitcher, even though she's a girl. But when she tries out for Little League, it's a whole different story. Girls are not eligible, period. It is a boy's game and always has been. It's not fair, and Katy's going to fight back. Inspired by what she's learning about civil rights in school, she sets out to prove that she's not the only girl who plays baseball. With the help of friendly librarians and some tenacious research skills, Katy discovers the forgotten history of female ballplayers. Why does no one know about them? Where are they now? And how can one ten-year-old change people’s minds about what girls can do?

Set in 1957—the world of Sputnik and Leave It to Beaver, saddle shoes and "Heartbreak Hotel"—Out of Left Field is both a detailed picture of a fascinating historic period and a timelessly inspiring story about standing up for equality at any age.
