Introduction to Instruments for 4th Grade Tuesday, March 29, 8–9:30AM The 7th and 8th-grade concert and jazz bands will be performing a live concert for each of the 4th-grade classes, to introduce to them all of the instruments they may choose from in our beginning band. Before the end of the school year, all 4th-grade students will have the opportunity to try the beginning band instruments and decide which one they would like to play next year in 5th grade! ATHLETICS Sign-Ups for 7th/8th Baseball, 7th/8th Softball, and 5th-8th Track & Field are now open. Sign-Ups are due by Friday, April 1st. The spring sports season will begin on Monday, April 4th. All students need to complete the Athletics Participation Agreement to participate in school sports. Please reach out with any questions. BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY  Starred reviews hail Streetcar to Justice as "a book that belongs in any civil rights library collection" (Publishers Weekly) and "completely fascinating and unique” (Kirkus). An ALA Notable Book and winner of a Septima Clark Book Award from the National Council for the Social Studies. One hundred years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Elizabeth Jennings’s refusal to leave a segregated streetcar in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan set into motion a major court case in New York City. On her way to church one day in July 1854, Elizabeth Jennings was refused a seat on a streetcar. When she took her seat anyway, she was bodily removed by the conductor and a nearby police officer and returned home bruised and injured. With the support of her family, the African American abolitionist community of New York, and Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Jennings took her case to court. Represented by a young lawyer named Chester A. Arthur (a future president of the United States) she was victorious, marking a major victory in the fight to desegregate New York City’s public transportation. Fifty years after her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus, Mrs. Rosa Parks is still one of the most important figures in the American civil rights movement. This tribute to Mrs. Parks is a celebration of her courageous action and the events that followed. Award-winning poet, writer, and activist Nikki Giovanni's evocative text combines with Bryan Collier's striking cut-paper images to retell the story of this historic event from a wholly unique and original perspective.  Born a slave in Maryland, Harriet Tubman knew first-hand what it meant to be someone's property; she was whipped by owners and almost killed by an overseer. It was from other field hands that she first heard about the Underground Railroad which she travelled by herself north to Philadelphia.
