VOLLEYBALL VISITORS FROM BFA

Last week Mary Brouilette from BFA came to work and speak with our 5-8 volleyball team!  Mary teaches leadership classes at BFA and is an advisor on the athletic council.  Players were put through four team-building activities to highlight the importance of collaboration and communication and how that can affect the overall success of a group. Ms. Brouilette also brought with her a BFA volleyball player to talk with students about what it means to be a good teammate.

NAVIGATORS - EMMONS

Miss Darcie joined us during STEAM class to teach the children all about a brand new fairytale story. This time she told us the story of the three little pigs. When she told us this story it wasn’t from a book it was from her heart like all great folktales and fairytales are told. She mesmerized the children (and the teachers) while they sat quietly hanging onto her every word as she acted out voices and did an amazing interpretation of the three little pigs. After the children decorated pigs and built homes of straw (paper) to see if their houses would hold up to the wolf. They all gathered around and one by one came up to see if their little pig home would get blown over by the wolf (a hairdryer with a wolf attached). Thanks, Miss Darcie for making this story come to life for the children. They had so much fun the laughter was amazing. Link to 39 Pictures. Photos by Ms. Emmons.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

Starred reviews hail Streetcar to Justice as "a book that belongs in any civil rights library collection" (Publishers Weekly) and "completely fascinating and unique” (Kirkus). An ALA Notable Book and winner of a Septima Clark Book Award from the National Council for the Social Studies.

One hundred years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Elizabeth Jennings’s refusal to leave a segregated streetcar in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan set into motion a major court case in New York City.

On her way to church one day in July 1854, Elizabeth Jennings was refused a seat on a streetcar. When she took her seat anyway, she was bodily removed by the conductor and a nearby police officer and returned home bruised and injured. With the support of her family, the African American abolitionist community of New York, and Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Jennings took her case to court. Represented by a young lawyer named Chester A. Arthur (a future president of the United States) she was victorious, marking a major victory in the fight to desegregate New York City’s public transportation.

Fifty years after her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus, Mrs. Rosa Parks is still one of the most important figures in the American civil rights movement. This tribute to Mrs. Parks is a celebration of her courageous action and the events that followed.

Award-winning poet, writer, and activist Nikki Giovanni's evocative text combines with Bryan Collier's striking cut-paper images to retell the story of this historic event from a wholly unique and original perspective.

Born a slave in Maryland, Harriet Tubman knew first-hand what it meant to be someone's property; she was whipped by owners and almost killed by an overseer. It was from other field hands that she first heard about the Underground Railroad which she travelled by herself north to Philadelphia. Throughout her long life (she died at the age of ninety-two) and long after the Civil War brought an end to slavery, this amazing woman was proof of what just one person can do.

“Young women looking for inspiration will surely find it” (Booklist) in these profiles of forty-six movers and shakers who made their mark before they turned twenty.

This fun and inspiring collection of influential stories provide forty-six illustrated examples of strong, independent female role models, all of whom first impacted the world as teenagers or younger. Originally published in two volumes over a decade ago, this fully updated and expanded edition of Girls Who Rocked the World spans a variety of achievements, interests, and backgrounds, from Harriet Tubman and Coco Chanel to S.E. Hinton and Maya Lin—each with her own incredible story of how she created life-changing opportunities for herself and the world. Personal aspirations from today’s young women are interspersed throughout the book, which also includes profiles of teenagers who are rocking the world right now—girls like Winter Vinecki, the creator of the nonprofit organization Team Winter, and Jazmin Whitley, the youngest designer to show at L.A. Fashion Week.

It’s never too soon to start making a difference, and these exhilarating examples of girl power in action make for ideal motivation.
