Highlighting Unified Arts at SACs!

St Albans City School has an amazing Unified Arts team filled with opportunities for students in all grades to learn and experience physical education, art, music, STEAM, and Health. We are excited to use the Daily Announcements to highlight Unified Arts activities at our school.

So without further ado, let us introduce two more of our Music Unified Arts teachers, Mr. Kelly and Ms. Stevens:

Ms. Stevens and Mr. Kelly have the wonderful opportunity to teach students to play instruments, and to make music together!  In just one year students go from knowing nothing about instruments to learning how to put instruments together, to make beautiful sounds on their instrument, to read music (which is a different language in and of itself), and to play the music they are reading.  Mr. Kelly’s favorite part of learning with students is learning from all the mistakes we make as we play new music.  Making mistakes is encouraged, even celebrated, in band because they create the opportunity for students to learn from them and become even better musicians.

The best part of music, however, is getting to share it with other people in our community - that is, afterall, what music is for!  This Thursday, in fact, we will have our first live performance since the pandemic began.  It will be such an exciting opportunity for the City School Bands that have worked very hard this year to prepare.

Mr. Kelly is in his fourth year teaching at City School, and previously taught instrumental music in Ohio for three years.  Along with teaching Mr. Kelly also enjoys biking, hiking, reading, antiquing, and playing MarioKart with friends.  He also enjoys traveling, having visited 11 countries outside the United States, two of which he traveled to just to perform.  Within the United States, Mr. Kelly has traveled to 43 states and performed in 16 of them while in college.

Ms. Stevens is currently a student intern from the University of Vermont and will get her license to teach after she completes her internship.  She has been working with the City School Bands for the last couple months as a part of her degree before she becomes a band director for another school district in Vermont.  In her free time Ms. Stevens enjoys reading, thrifting, and playing video games.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

Their true stories will thrill and inspire you--meet a mountain climber, a skydiver, a fossil hunter, a college football player, a surfer, a world traveler, a circus performer, and an open-water marathon swimmer. As you read about their accomplishments, you'll get an up-close look at the courage, hard work and persistence it takes to reach these kinds of goals.

This beautiful picture book tells the little-known story of Raven Wilkinson, the first African American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company and an inspiration to Misty Copeland.

When she was only five years old, her parents took her to see the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.

Raven perched on her crushed velvet seat, heard the tympani, and cried with delight even before the curtain lifted. From that moment on, her passion for dance only grew stronger.

No black ballerina had ever danced with a major touring troupe before. Raven would be the first.

Decode the story of Elizebeth Friedman, the cryptologist who took down gangsters and Nazi spies

In this picture book biography, young readers will learn all about Elizebeth Friedman (1892–1980), a brilliant American code breaker who smashed Nazi spy rings, took down gangsters, and created the CIA's first cryptology unit. Her story came to light when her secret papers were finally declassified in 2015. From thwarting notorious rumrunners with only paper and pencil to “counter-spying into the minds and activities of” Nazis, Elizebeth held a pivotal role in the early days of US cryptology. No code was too challenging for her to crack, and Elizebeth’s work undoubtedly saved thousands of lives. Extensive back matter includes explanations of codes and ciphers, further information on cryptology, a bibliography, a timeline of Elizebeth’s life, plus secret messages for young readers to decode.

* "A bright salutation of a story, with one determined woman at its center."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review

The inspiring story of the first female to run the Boston Marathon comes to life in stunningly vivid collage illustrations.

Because Bobbi Gibb is a girl, she's not allowed to run on her school's track team. But after school, no one can stop her--and she's free to run endless miles to her heart's content. She is told no yet again when she tries to enter the Boston Marathon in 1966, because the officials claim that it's a man's race and that women are just not capable of running such a long distance. So what does Bobbi do? She bravely sets out to prove the naysayers wrong and show the world just what a girl can do.

This is the story of Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, who transformed a poor neighborhood in Chicago by opening up her house as a community center.

Ever since she was a little girl, Jane Addams hoped to help people in need. She wanted to live right in the middle of the roughest, poorest communities and create a place where people could go to find food, work, and help. In 1889, she bought a house in a run-down Chicago neighborhood and turned it into a settlement home, adding on playgrounds, kindergartens, and a public bath. By 1907, Hull House included thirteen buildings. And by the early 1920s, more than 9,000 people visited Jane's home each week. An inspiration to all, Jane Addams continues to be a role model to girls and women of all ages.

Learn about the civil rights activist Ella Baker in this inspiring picture book from Sibert Honor winner Patricia Hruby Powell and Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie.

“What do you hope to accomplish?” asked Ella Baker’s granddaddy when she was still a child.

Her mother provided the answer: “Lift as you climb.”

Long before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, Ella Baker worked to lift others up by fighting racial injustice and empowering poor African Americans to stand up for their rights. Her dedication and grassroots work in many communities made her a valuable ally for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she has been ranked as one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement. In the 1960s she worked to register voters and organize sit-ins, and she became a teacher and mentor to many young activists.

Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie’s powerful pictures pair with Patricia Hruby Powell’s poignant words to paint a vivid portrait of the fight for the freedom of the human spirit.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author Malala Yousafzai's first picture book, inspired by her own childhood.

As a child in Pakistan, Malala made a wish for a magic pencil. She would use it to make everyone happy, to erase the smell of garbage from her city, to sleep an extra hour in the morning. But as she grew older, Malala saw that there were more important things to wish for. She saw a world that needed fixing. And even if she never found a magic pencil, Malala realized that she could still work hard every day to make her wishes come true.
