INTRODUCTION TO BAND FOR 4TH GRADERS

Mr. Kelly and the 7th & 8th-grade band introduced all the fourth graders to the idea of being in a band this past Tuesday morning. 3-29-2022. The band played a soundtrack from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie and some rock music from the group “Chicago”. Between short musical performances, Mr. Kelly had band students hold up instruments while he talked about them. There was plenty of time for instrument questions from the fourth graders. Next week there will be a chance for students to try out instruments to see if joining the band as fifth-graders next year might be a good choice. Highlighting Unified Arts at SACs!

St Albans City School has an amazing Unified Arts team filled with opportunities for students in all grades to learn and experience physical education, art, music, STEAM, and Health. We are excited to use the Daily Announcements to highlight Unified Arts activities at our school.

So without further ado, let us introduce two more of our Music Unified Arts teachers, Mr. Kelly and Ms. Stevens:

Ms. Stevens and Mr. Kelly have the wonderful opportunity to teach students to play instruments, and to make music together!  In just one year students go from knowing nothing about instruments to learning how to put instruments together, to make beautiful sounds on their instrument, to read music (which is a different language in and of itself), and to play the music they are reading.  Mr. Kelly’s favorite part of learning with students is learning from all the mistakes we make as we play new music.  Making mistakes is encouraged, even celebrated, in band because they create the opportunity for students to learn from them and become even better musicians.

The best part of music, however, is getting to share it with other people in our community - that is, after all, what music is for!  This Thursday, in fact, we will have our first live performance since the pandemic began.  It will be such an exciting opportunity for the City School Bands that have worked very hard this year to prepare.

Mr. Kelly is in his fourth year teaching at City School, and previously taught instrumental music in Ohio for three years.  Along with teaching Mr. Kelly also enjoys biking, hiking, reading, antiquing, and playing MarioKart with friends.  He also enjoys traveling, having visited 11 countries outside the United States, two of which he traveled to just to perform.  Within the United States, Mr. Kelly has traveled to 43 states and performed in 16 of them while in college.

Ms. Stevens is currently a student intern from the University of Vermont and will get her license to teach after she completes her internship.  She has been working with the City School Bands for the last couple of months as a part of her degree before she becomes a band director for another school district in Vermont.  In her free time, Ms. Stevens enjoys reading, thrifting, and playing video games.

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

The bold story of Katherine Johnson, an African-American mathematician who worked for NASA during the space race and was depicted in the film Hidden Figures.

You've likely heard of the historic Apollo 13 moon landing. But do you know about the mathematical genius who made sure that Apollo 13 returned safely home?

As a child, Katherine Johnson loved to count. She counted the steps on the road, the number of dishes and spoons she washed in the kitchen sink, everything! Boundless, curious, and excited by calculations, young Katherine longed to know as much as she could about math, about the universe.

From Katherine's early beginnings as a gifted student to her heroic accomplishments as a prominent mathematician at NASA, Counting on Katherine is the story of a groundbreaking American woman who not only calculated the course of moon landings but, in turn, saved lives and made enormous contributions to history.

An inspiring picture book biography of storyteller, puppeteer, and New York City’s first
Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature.

When she came to America in 1921, Pura Belpré carried the cuentos folklóricos of her Puerto Rican homeland. Finding a new home at the New York Public Library as a bilingual assistant, she turned her popular retellings into libros and spread story seeds across the land. Today, these seeds have grown into a lush landscape as generations of children and storytellers continue to share her tales and celebrate Pura’s legacy.

Brought to colorful life by Paola Escobar’s elegant and exuberant illustrations and Anika Aldamuy Denise’s lyrical text, this gorgeous book is perfect for the pioneers in your life.

The inspiring autobiography of NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who helped launch Apollo 11.

As a young girl, Katherine Johnson showed an exceptional aptitude for math. In school, she quickly skipped ahead several grades and was soon studying complex equations with the support of a professor who saw great promise in her. But ability and opportunity did not always go hand in hand. As an African American and a girl growing up in an era of brutal racism and sexism, Katherine faced daily challenges. Still, she lived her life with her father’s words in mind: “You are no better than anyone else, and nobody else is better than you.”

In the early 1950s, Katherine was thrilled to join the organization that would become NASA. She worked on many of NASA’s biggest projects including the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first men on the moon.

Katherine Johnson’s story was made famous in the bestselling book and Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. Now in Reaching for the Moon she tells her own story for the first time, in a lively autobiography that will inspire young readers everywhere.

“If you’ve got a good idea, and you know it’s going to work, go ahead and do it.”

The inspiring story of Grace Hopper—the boundary-breaking woman who revolutionized computer science—is told in an engaging picture book biography.

Who was Grace Hopper? A software tester, workplace jester, cherished mentor, ace inventor, avid reader, naval leader—AND rule breaker, chance taker, and troublemaker. Acclaimed picture book author Laurie Wallmark (Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine) once again tells the riveting story of a trailblazing woman. Grace Hopper coined the term “computer bug” and taught computers to “speak English.” Throughout her life, Hopper succeeded in doing what no one had ever done before. Delighting in difficult ideas and in defying expectations, the insatiably curious Hopper truly was “Amazing Grace” . . . and a role model for science- and math-minded girls and boys. With a wealth of witty quotes and richly detailed illustrations, this book brings Hopper's incredible accomplishments to life.

With more than 100 full-color photographs and illustrations and detailed sidebars, this entry in DK's acclaimed Biography series celebrates a pioneer who changed how the world is viewed: aviatrix Amelia Earhart.

Supports the Common Core State Standards.

Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good.

They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world.

In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career.
