PICTURES NAVIGATORS The Kindergarten students in Ms Lawyer and Ms Rie’s class learned all about maple sugaring. Students began the unit with books and educational videos. They learned about sugar maple trees and how maple sap can turn into maple syrup. Mr Hoben and Mr D talked with our students about the trees on our property, gathering sap and bringing it to the sugarhouse for boiling. Each student helped with tapping the tree and checking the sap bucket each day. We sampled a taste of sap finding it to taste like sweet water. We enjoyed going into the sugarhouse to see the sap boiling and turning into syrup. We all enjoyed a sample of warm sweet maple syrup! Our culminating event was to cook our own breakfast and enjoy foods that tasted so good with our very own maple syrup! Link to 85 Pictures. Pictures from Ms. Lawyer. BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY Twenty-six amazing women; twenty-six amazing stories. From writers to scientists, sports figures to politicians, this diverse collection highlights women who changed the world. Celebrating twenty-six unique voices, visions, and victories, Amelia to Zora, introduces children to the scope of both the struggles and the achievements of women historically and globally. Beautiful and intricate collages bring these women’s stories and messages to life in this collection that will bring young readers inspiration in each turn of the page. Elizabeth Cady Stanton stood up and fought for what she believed in. From an early age, she knew that women were not given rights equal to men. But rather than accept her lesser status, Elizabeth went to college and later gathered other like-minded women to challenge the right to vote. Here is the inspiring story of an extraordinary woman who changed America forever because she wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Elizabeth Leads the Way is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year. This insightful account of the great African American vocalist considers her life and musical career in the context of the history of civil rights in this country. Drawing on Anderson's own writings and other contemporary accounts, Russell Freedman shows readers a singer pursuing her art despite the social constraints that limited the careers of black performers in the 1920s and 1930s. Though not a crusader or a spokesperson by nature, Marian Anderson came to stand for all black artists—and for all Americans of color—when, with the help of such prominent figures as Eleanor Roosevelt, she gave her landmark 1939 performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which signaled the end of segregation in the arts. Meet a brave young hero of Pakistan who stood up for the right to freedom and education in this inspirational nonfiction picture book from acclaimed author-illustrator Jeanette Winter. Malala Yousafzai was afraid to speak out for the right of girls to attend school. She was shot by those who disagreed with her in 2012. Malala miraculously survived and continues to speak out around the world. |
