BITS AND BYTES STEAM RESTAURANT - INVESTIGATORS 1ST GRADE -TANEY

All the 1st grade classroom groups in the building are having an opportunity to visit the Bits and Bytes STEAM restaurant on March 31st and April 1st.

On Thursday at noon, 3-31-2022, Investigators 1st grade visited the restaurant and were profiled with pictures and videos. The video will take a little while to process and will be presented on another day. In the meantime, you can get an idea of what the restaurant experience was like for students.

Students were grouped into threes and settled at tables in the restaurant

They were given menus that showed what appetizers, main courses and desserts were available.

The makerspace staff and interns served them

For appetizers, everybody got “bread sticks” and they got to choose another item. Mini wind tunnels, duplos and hex bugs were very popular options.

For the main course, students selected maker kits, Rokenboks, or Legos to free build with.

For entertainment, puzzle sheets were handed out and students took time enjoying the challenge.

When the main bits and bytes meal had been consumed, the dessert cart was wheeled out. It showed little puzzle creatures students could build. The creature each student chose for “dessert” could be pieced together and taken with them when they left the restaurant.

The students had a great time. One exclaimed that “This was the best day ever!!!”

BOOKS TO EXPLORE IN OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY

Neurodiversity Book Highlights

What is neurodiversity? Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.” (Baumer, 2021)

Each of the carefully selected titles in this month’s library highlights focus on characters who have neurological variances and differences such as autism, dyslexia, and ADHD. And did you know April is Autism Acceptance Month?  Use these titles to explore themes around neurodiversity with students and to cultivate meaningful classroom discussions.

This collection can be found linked through our library webpage and please reach out to Mrs. Levine at  alevine@maplerun.org if you have any questions on how to access these titles!

The main character has feelings so big that they glow from his cheeks, spill out of his eyes, and jump up and down on his chest. When he hears a joke, he bursts with joy. When a loud truck drives by, he cries. When his loved ones are having a hard day, he feels their emotions as if they were his own.

Beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse, children and adults explore the whole spectrum of feelings and readers navigate the emotional challenges they face throughout the day.

My Awesome Autism is a book designed to help children learn about their autism diagnosis and diversity.  It helps children to understand that they are truly wonderful as they are, and do not need to conform or adapt to understand things that do not suit their needs. It helps to open up the subject in a gentle and nurturing way.
