WALKING WEDNESDAY RESULTS

One hundred and thirty four students and 21 adults walked or biked into school on Wednesday, October 26th. The weather was on their side with warmth, sunshine and no wind. It was delightful. The Voyagers really came out in large numbers. Triumph, Discovery and Imagination also had substantial participation.

A wonderful surprise for walkers and bikers was the offering of a cup of warm apple cider that kindergarteners and staff and students from H.O.P.E. (hands on practical education) had made. The cider was delicious and popular.

Thanks to all who joined in on this week’s Walking Wednesday and to those who supported the event. The only Walking Wednesday for November is coming up next week on the 2nd. We hope to see you on one of the seven walking routes that day.  Link to 30 Pictures.

The raffle for Walking Wednesday water bottles will be held on Thursday and the results posted on Friday.

APPLE CIDER AT ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL

In 2014 we were awarded a small grant to purchase a durable cider press for the school. We chose a stainless steel Amish-made model that is well designed. It has proven its worth over the last eight years.

Each year students join with the H.O.P.E. (hands-on practical education) staff to gather apples, crush them into pulp and then squeeze the juice out of the pulp to make cider. Cider making and sharing is something that our students look forward to in the fall.

H.O.P.E. students traveled to Shelburne Farms Orchards a week ago (10-19-2022) to gather donated dropped apples to bring back to our school for pressing. Shout out to Shelburne Farms for their generosity.

Shelburne Farms orchard is huge!

The hard working students celebrated after their harvest.

CIDER PRESSING BEGAN ON TUESDAY, 10-25-2022

Ms. Lawyer’s group was one of many younger-age classroom groups that tried their hands at cider making. Link to 52 Pictures by Ms. Lawyer. Mr. Craib also took some pictures. Link to 24 Photos.

NAVIGATORS APPLE CIDER MAKING - EMMONS

Mrs. Emmons class visited Mr. D and Mr. Hoben to learn how to make apple cider. It was a beautiful day outside for the end of October and the children really loved being outside and learning all about this process. The groups split into two. One group was using the apple press to grind up the apples and the other group was collecting and washing apples to prepare them for grinding. Each group got to do both activities! Mr. Hoben and Mr. D. Gave us instruction on all aspects of this process and showed us how the apple press pushed down all the apples to make apple cider. At the end all students and teachers enjoyed fresh hot cider! Link to 68 Pictures taken by Ms. Emmons. 10-25-2022

EXCEPTIONAL PICTURES BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY

The Red Clover book awards are a list of exceptional picture books created by librarians around the state since 1997.  Each of these texts are in our school library and here you will find resources that go with each book.

Samples:

In 1910, Captain Robert Scott prepared his crew for a trip that no one had ever completed: a journey to the South Pole. He vowed to get there any way he could, even if it meant looking death in the eye. Then, not long before he set out, another intrepid explorer, Roald Amundsen, set his sights on the same goal. Suddenly two teams were vying to be the first to make history―what was to be an expedition had become a perilous race.

In 2018, Captain Louis Rudd readied himself for a similarly grueling task: the first unaided, unsupported solo crossing of treacherous Antarctica. But little did he know that athlete Colin O’Brady was training for the same trek―and he was determined to beat Louis to the finish line. For fans of Michael Tougias’ The Finest Hours, this gripping account of two history-making moments of exploration and competition is perfect for budding scientists, survivalists, and thrill seekers.

There are zero reasons for Theo Ripley to look forward to his family vacation. Not only are he, sister Laura, and nature-obsessed Dad going to Big Bend, the least popular National Park, but once there, the family will be camping. And Theo is an indoor animal. It doesn’t help that this will be the first vacation they’re taking since Mom passed away.

Once there, the family contends with 110 degree days, wild bears, and an annoying amateur ornithologist and his awful teenage vlogger son. Then, Theo’s dad hits him with a whopper of a surprise: the whole trip is just a trick to introduce his secret new girlfriend.

Theo tries to squash down the pain in his chest. But when it becomes clear that this is an auditioning-to-be-his-stepmom girlfriend, Theo must find a way to face his grief and talk to his dad before his family is forever changed.
