WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TOMORROW

This will be the only organized Walking Wednesday for over a month. The next one is December 7th. Come out and join us. Last week’s Walking Wednesday had the biggest turnout of the year. It would be nice to see that many people come out again. Be sure to check in at the front of the school to be eligible for the raffle.

Here are two photos of walkers from past Novembers.

PICTURES

STEWARDSHIP DAY

Participation was huge around the school from the hay rides and wetland walks to story walks and tours of the rain gardens. Thanks to the stewardship committee and all the learning communities for organizing and participating in all the different aspects of the fall Stewardship Day.

Many pictures were taken throughout the day but there has been no time to process them. Photos will be shared in the upcoming days. In the meantime, here is a brief look a few.

EXCEPTIONAL PICTURE BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY

The Red Clover book awards are a list of exceptional picture books created by librarians around the state since 1997.  Each of these texts are in our school library and here you will find resources that go with each book.

Samples:

Aware of the racial tumult in the years after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Mei tries to remain blissfully focused on her job, her close friendship with the camp foreman's daughter, and telling stories about Paul Bunyan--reinvented as Po Pan Yin (Auntie Po), an elderly Chinese matriarch.

Anchoring herself with stories of Auntie Po, Mei navigates the difficulty and politics of lumber camp work and her growing romantic feelings for her friend Bee. The Legend of Auntie Po is about who gets to own a myth, and about immigrant families and communities holding on to rituals and traditions while staking out their own place in the United States.

Reha feels torn between two worlds: school, where she’s the only Indian American student, and home, with her family’s traditions and holidays. But Reha’s parents don’t understand why she’s conflicted—they only notice when Reha doesn’t meet their strict expectations. Reha feels disconnected from her mother, or Amma. Although their names are linked—Reha means “star” and Punam means “moon”—they are a universe apart.

Then Reha finds out that her Amma is sick. Really sick.

Reha, who dreams of becoming a doctor even though she can’t stomach the sight of blood, is determined to make her Amma well again. She’ll be the perfect daughter, if it means saving her Amma’s life.
