MONTH of CODE 2022

Exploring computer science with creativity and fun at St Albans City School

Artificial intelligence is an important and emerging field in computer science.  Try out this quick Google artificial intelligence training application to get an idea of how computers are trained to identify drawings.  This game can be played as a whole class (with one person trying the drawings at a time on the smartboard, or individuals can play on their chromebooks too!)

Google Quick Draw

You can learn more about how this artificial intelligence works here with a short video.

COMING SOON:  The next installment of the Month of Code mystery is almost here!  WHO is the professor?

SKIING OPPORTUNITY FOR 6TH-8TH GRADERS

Jay Peak Season’s Pass

We will have a limited number of Jay Peak Season’s Passes for students in grades 6-8. These will be useful for families that ski. Discounted equipment rentals are available. Transportation to and from the mountain is not included. Yet, for students that will have access to use this pass, we want to make it available.

Any student that would like to have access to a pass and feels they will be able to make use of it, please write a letter of request to Mr. Craib and explain how you are a Safe, Achieving, Caring member of our school community.  Mr. Craib will create the list that goes to Jay Peak. The deadline for letters of request is December 9th

LIBRARY BOOKS

Check out some of the books in our library that honor and celebrate human rights!

John Lewis was a civil rights leader and United States congressman who never stopped speaking up for justice, equality, and peace. Before he marched with Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement, John was a thoughtful kid who loved learning but wasn’t able to go to a good school because of segregation.

He wanted to make a difference in his community, so he organized peaceful protests to end segregation and fight for equal rights for Black Americans. Explore how John went from being a young farm boy to a famous activist, politician, and leader.

Who was Grace Hopper?

A software tester, workplace jester, cherished mentor, ace inventor, avid reader, naval leader—AND rule breaker, chance taker, and troublemaker. Acclaimed picture book author Laurie Wallmark (Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine) once again tells the riveting story of a trailblazing woman. Grace Hopper coined the term “computer bug” and taught computers to “speak English.” Throughout her life, Hopper succeeded in doing what no one had ever done before. Delighting in difficult ideas and in defying expectations, the insatiably curious Hopper truly was “Amazing Grace” . . . and a role model for science- and math-minded girls and boys.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

What is Wreaths Across America?

It is a program where we honor deceased veterans by putting wreaths on their graves. Team USA is working with local Veterans groups to enhance the tradition throughout our community.  Students will be holding a ceremony on December 16th at Mt Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans, VT. This is a national event held each December.  For more information visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

Please consider supporting these efforts. Order form. Completed forms can be delivered to Team USA.

Thank you,  Team USA
