PICTURES

INVESTIGATORS 1ST GRADE READING - ROSS

While Ms. Ross took turns working one-on-one or one-on-two with her students, other students practiced their reading skills around the room to help them find outlined pictures that could be colored in. In grade one, sounding out four of five letter words is still quite a challenging task. They all worked quite diligently on it. Link to 9 Pictures. 12-5-2022

VOYAGERS 5TH GRADE READING - SATO

Students read with and to each other during this class. Having just attended a 1st grade reading class moments before (see above), it was interesting to observe the fluency and comfort students had achieved with reading after four more years of practice and instruction. ELKS NATIONAL HOOP SHOOT: COUNTY COMPETITION

On Saturday, December 3rd, five students from City School participated in the Elk's Hoop Shoot Competition at BFA. The Elk's Hoop Shoot is a free throw competition with ages ranging from 8-13. Our students participated against other students from Franklin County. Overall our students represented City School very well.

Thank you for participating. You all did a great job! Ms. Jarvis

KALEIDOSCOPE K-3 FIVE SENSES ACTIVITIES

Ms. Marcus’ students did cardio drumming and made "I Spy" bags that were used to explore all five senses! Link to 30 Pictures. https://photos.app.goo.gl/dWiuaUPquCZRezYQ6

PARENT MAKER NIGHT REPORT - BORST, RANKIN, BERTUCCI

More than a dozen parents visited St. Albans City School last Thursday evening (12-1-2022) to make jewelry and decorations in the makerspace. They used a laser cutter, stamping equipment, 3-D printing press, button maker and more to create some very special items. All of them achieved that goal. The evening was a chance for family members to immerse themselves in the kinds of experiences their children have access to and also a time for them to develop a sense of community and belonging in association with the school. Link to 12 Pictures.

USA 8TH GRADE ART - MONTGOMERY

These students continued to work on their image expanding project. Link to 9 Pictures. 12-5-2022

KALEIDOSCOPE P.E. JARVIS & ANDREWS

While some students worked on basketball skills at one end of the gym, others built with blue blocks. These foam blocks are a great way to engage all age groups in a creative construction mind-set. Link to 13 Pictures. 12-2-2022

DICTIONARY

We have all become so accustomed to spelling and definition checks online. As a consequence, physical dictionaries have basically disappeared from most settings. However, our library still has a large dictionary and Ms. Levine was spotted showing students how to use it. 12-2-2022.

MONTH of CODE 2022

Exploring computer science with creativity and fun at St Albans City School

The month of code is a great time to learn about all of the resources we have at St Albans City School!  The makerspace/STEAM team is here to support you both at home and at school and we invite you to check out the website we have created to learn more about all of the great coding opportunities available at every grade level. The Month of Code website can be found under the Enrichment tab on the St Albans City School website.  It is full of online resources and ideas sorted by grade level.  Activities include things you can do with and without a computer.

SKIING OPPORTUNITY FOR 6TH-8TH GRADERS

Jay Peak Season’s Pass

We will have a limited number of Jay Peak Season’s Passes for students in grades 6-8. These will be useful for families that ski. Discounted equipment rentals are available. Transportation to and from the mountain is not included. Yet, for students that will have access to use this pass, we want to make it available.

Any student that would like to have access to a pass and feels they will be able to make use of it, please write a letter of request to Mr. Craib and explain how you are a Safe, Achieving, Caring member of our school community.  Mr. Craib will create the list that goes to Jay Peak. The deadline for letters of request is December 9th

LIBRARY BOOKS

Check out some of the books in our library that honor and celebrate human rights!

Raven Wilkinson was born on February 2, 1935, in New York City. From the time she was a little girl, all she wanted to do was dance. On Raven's ninth birthday, her uncle gifted her with ballet lessons, and she completely fell in love with dance. While she was a student at Columbia University, Raven auditioned for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and was finally accepted on her third try, even after being told she couldn't dance with them because of her skin color.  When she started touring with her troupe in the United States in 1955, Raven encountered much racism in the South, but the applause, alongside the opportunity to dance, made all the hardship worth it. Several years later she would dance for royalty with the Dutch National Ballet and regularly performed with the New York City Opera until she was fifty.

Malala's first picture book will inspire young readers everywhere to find the magic all around them.

As a child in Pakistan, Malala made a wish for a magic pencil. She would use it to make everyone happy, to erase the smell of garbage from her city, to sleep an extra hour in the morning. But as she grew older, Malala saw that there were more important things to wish for. She saw a world that needed fixing. And even if she never found a magic pencil, Malala realized that she could still work hard every day to make her wishes come true.

This beautifully illustrated volume tells Malala's story for a younger audience and shows them the worldview that allowed Malala to hold on to hope even in the most difficult of times.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

What is Wreaths Across America?

It is a program where we honor deceased veterans by putting wreaths on their graves. Team USA is working with local Veterans groups to enhance the tradition throughout our community.  Students will be holding a ceremony on December 16th at Mt Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans, VT. This is a national event held each December.  For more information visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

Please consider supporting these efforts. Order form. Completed forms can be delivered to Team USA.

Thank you,  Team USA
