BAND INSTRUCTION BY THE VERMONT YOUTH ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION DIRECTOR

On Thursday, February 9th, the advanced St. Albans City School band had the privilege of being taught by the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association director, Mark Alpizar. Mr. Alpizar, has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a conductor, clarinetist, and music educator throughout the United States. He is in his third season as music director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association.

The goal of his visit was to help our students polish the music pieces they plan to perform in the upcoming band concert in a week (Tuesday, February 21st). Over the course of 40 minutes, he helped students understand just how to work together and separately to make the band shine. He was focused, energetic, funny and complementary. Our school bands are amazing and he was clearly impressed with this group.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Grades 6-8

Dear Caregivers:

Our school is taking part in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). This was developed in 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The YRBS gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 12th grade students. Schools, communities, and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding. We will administer the survey to our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on February 22nd. If you would like to learn more about the survey or see a copy it is available to view here. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the opt out form and return it to Kristen Hersey in the School Counselor’s Office. Copies of the opt out form were sent home with students and are also available to download here. Forms must be returned by February 20th.

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING IN THE LIBRARY

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

The St. Albans City School Library honors Black History Month with a curated booklist of recent works that examine the Black experience. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in history. These books will honor and highlight powerful stories and can be found in our school library today!

One of our very own Red Clover Nominees from this year’s list! Hall-of-famer Elgin Baylor was one of basketball’s all-time-greatest players—an innovative athlete, team player, and quiet force for change. One of the first professional African-American players, he inspired others on and off the court. But when traveling for away games, many hotels and restaurants turned Elgin away because he was black. One night, Elgin had enough and staged a one-man protest that captured the attention of the press, the public, and the NBA.

Young Nya takes little sister Akeer along on the two-hour walk to fetch water for the family. But Akeer becomes too ill to walk, and Nya faces the impossible: her sister and the full water vessel together are too heavy to carry.

As she struggles, she discovers that if she manages to take one step, then another, she can reach home and Mama’s care.

Bold, impressionistic paintings by Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honor winner Brian Pinkney evoke the dry, barren landscape and the tenderness between the two sisters.
