RENAISSANCE’S ANNUAL PI DAY CELEBRATION

The 7th and 8th grade Renaissance math teachers made a big deal about Pi Day which always falls on March 14th. Pi is the mathematical constant and irrational number, 3.14..., with an infinite number of digits after the decimal point. These digits occur without repetition or pattern. Pi is important because it is used to find the area and circumference of a circle.

To make Pi’s uniqueness more meaningful to their students, math teachers, Mr. Lovelette and Mr. Jetter, had their students memorize as many digits after the decimal in Pi as possible. The 7th and 8th grade students with the highest memorized number got to smash a pie plate of whipped cream into the face of their teachers. Photos and Videos were taken of the overall winners reciting Pi and throwing pies.

These videos and photos were collected on Friday, March 17th.

TRIUMPH 4TH & 5TH GRADE RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINES

Ms. Draper wanted her students to realize that reactions can work in succession. One event can trigger another and then another until a final event is completed. Rube Goldberg machines offer a perfect way to examine such cascading reactions. Therefore, Ms. Draper asked the students to create their own. Here are just a few examples of the work done by her students.

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in history.  Take a look at the collection of books that you can find in our library!

Link to all the books relevant to Women's History Month.

Here are today's highlighted books...

They had the right stuff. They defied the prejudices of the time. And they blazed a trail for generations of women to follow.

What does it take to be an astronaut? Excellence at flying, courage, intelligence, resistance to stress, top physical shape — any checklist would include these. But when America created NASA in 1958, there was another unspoken rule: you had to be a man. Here is the tale of thirteen women who proved that they were not only as tough as the toughest man but also brave enough to challenge the government. They were blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and the scrawled note of one of the most powerful men in Washington. But even though the Mercury 13 women did not make it into space, they did not lose, for their example empowered young women to take their place in the sky, piloting jets and commanding space capsules. ALMOST ASTRONAUTS is the story of thirteen true pioneers of the space age.

This is how history should be told to kids—with photos, illustrations, and captivating storytelling.

From Newbery Honor medalist Susan Campbell Bartoletti and in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in America comes the page-turning, stunningly illustrated, and tirelessly researched story of the little-known DC Women’s March of 1913.

Bartoletti spins a story like few others—deftly taking readers by the hand and introducing them to suffragists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. Paul and Burns met in a London jail and fought their way through hunger strikes, jail time, and much more to win a long, difficult victory for America and its women.

Includes extensive back matter and dozens of archival images to evoke the time period between 1909 and 1920.

A great classroom and bedtime read-aloud, Mae Among the Stars is the perfect book for young readers who have big dreams and even bigger hearts.

When Little Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering.

She wanted to be an astronaut.

Her mom told her, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.”

Little Mae’s curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents' encouraging words, paved the way for her incredible success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space.

This book will inspire other young girls to reach for the stars, to aspire for the impossible, and to persist with childlike imagination.
