VERMONT YOUTH ORCHESTRA WINDS, BRASS AND PERCUSSION NIGHT - KELLY
On Monday night, four City School 8th grade students (Finn Lund, George Remillard, Jude Sato, and Amani Yates) participated in the Vermont Youth Orchestra's Winds, Brass, & Percussion Night.  They volunteered their evening to play with approximately 30 high school/middle school students from across the state to learn an entire concert program in one evening.  Dr. Mark Alpizar, director of the VYO, led the rehearsal for two hours before directing the students through an exciting and challenging concert for all parents in attendance.  Our students performed "The Raiders March" from Indiana Jones, "Pokemon - Rival Battle Theme," and "Big Blue" from the game F-Zero. Link to 12 pictures and three video clips.

All video clips are 2-3 minutes in length

Thanks to our band instructor, Mr. Kelly, for recording this event.

USA & RENAISSANCE IN THE TEACHING KITCHEN - JACOBS

Ms. Jacobs worked with small groups of 7th and 8th graders from each of the two 7/8 learning communities. The goal was to give these students a chance to gain some basic baking skills. They learned how to read recipes, measure ingredients carefully and then blend them together. They learned about chilling their ingredients, pre-warming the oven, baking their cookies and getting them off the baking sheets. Equally important, students learned how to clean up their stations as they moved through the baking process. Each group lesson took a little over half an hour. Link to Pictures.

MESSAGE FROM VOYAGERS

This week is "International Water Day" week at SACS!

The 5th and 6th graders would like to share some information about the importance of water with their younger peers! Our students will come share that information, and read a story aloud to your Class, then invite them to participate in our "We love Water coloring contest"!

We will select a lucky winner from each grade!

If you are interested in signing up your class, please pick a time slot on the attached Google form and add your name to the time you would like. Hurry slots are limited.

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in history.  Take a look at the collection of books that you can find in our library!

Link to all the books relevant to Women's History Month.

Here are today's highlighted books...

Every boy in the neighborhood knows Katy Gordon is their best pitcher, even though she's a girl. But when she tries out for Little League, it's a whole different story. Girls are not eligible, period. It is a boy's game and always has been. It's not fair, and Katy's going to fight back. Inspired by what she's learning about civil rights in school, she sets out to prove that she's not the only girl who plays baseball. With the help of friendly librarians and some tenacious research skills, Katy discovers the forgotten history of female ball players. Why does no one know about them? Where are they now? And how can one ten-year-old change people’s minds about what girls can do?

Set in 1957—the world of Sputnik and Leave It to Beaver, saddle shoes and "Heartbreak Hotel"—Out of Left Field is both a detailed picture of a fascinating historic period and a timelessly inspiring story about standing up for equality at any age.

In kitchens and living rooms, in garages and labs and basements, even in converted chicken coops, women and girls have invented ingenious innovations that have made our lives simpler and better. Their creations are some of the most enduring (the windshield wiper) and best loved (the chocolate chip cookie). What inspired these women, and just how did they turn their ideas into realities?

Features women inventors Ruth Wakefield, Mary Anderson, Stephanie Kwolek, Bette Nesmith Graham, Patsy O. Sherman, Ann Moore, Grace Murray Hopper, Margaret E. Knight, Jeanne Lee Crews, and Valerie L. Thomas, as well as young inventors ten-year-old Becky Schroeder and eleven-year-old Alexia Abernathy. Illustrated in vibrant collage by Caldecott Honor artist Melissa Sweet.

Take a lively look at women's history from aboard a bicycle, which granted females the freedom of mobility and helped empower women's liberation. Through vintage photographs, advertisements, cartoons, and songs, Wheels of Change transports young readers to bygone eras to see how women used the bicycle to improve their lives. Witty in tone and scrapbook-like in presentation, the book deftly covers early (and comical) objections, influence on fashion, and impact on social change inspired by the bicycle, which, according to Susan B. Anthony, "has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world."
