PICTURES PART 1 OF A GREEN HOUSE GAS STUDY CONDUCTED BY 5TH GRADERS This winter we partnered with the Vermont Energy Education Project (VEEP) to help all our 5th grade students and their teachers develop a deep understanding of energy and climate with a variety of hands-on science activities. We decided that studying vehicle emissions (exhaust) would help us learn about the impact of green house gasses on our climate better. We began by collecting samples of exhaust coming out of idling vehicles. We had a 10-foot-long plastic tube that we attached to the exhaust pipes of idling vehicles. The goal was to time how long it took to fill the tube and see if size of vehicles affected how much exhaust (CO2 and water vapor) was expelled. The data showed us that the engines in small vehicles produce much less exhaust than those of big vehicles (taking longer to fill the tube), which means that smaller vehicles produce fewer green house gasses than larger vehicles. Link to 3-minute video of the collection process. We also learned that electric cars do not produce emissions while running. In the next announcements we will show how we examined the green house gasses found in exhaust from petroleum products. ADVENTURERS PRE-K - RANKIN & KOSKI These pictures show the students at play and during Ms. Rankin’s visit to teach STEAM. One goal of STEAM, in these students’ early years of school, is to introduce them to basic tools. On Thursday they learned the basics of using a large plastic sewing needle with yarn. Each person received the letter of their first name that they could thread the needle through. A fun learning experience. Link to 20 Pictures. 3-9-2023 TRAVELERS TWINS |
