PICTURES PART 2 OF A GREEN HOUSE GAS STUDY CONDUCTED BY 5TH GRADERS In this experiment, the goal was to measure two greenhouse gas products resulting from the burning of a petroleum candle; water vapor and carbon dioxide. Essentially, the burning of the candle represented a vehicle engine burning petroleum gasoline. The water vapor coming off the candle was detected with a water-sensitive test strip that turned from blue to pink. The carbon dioxide coming off the candle was made visible when it combined with lime water to create particles of chalk. In other words, the lime water turned cloudy white when carbon dioxide was pulled through it. When the experiment was over, students knew from hands-on experience that water vapor and carbon dioxide were produced by the petroleum-based burning candle. Check out this picture of the test equipment used for the classroom experiments.
From left to right: The burning candle. A blue test strip used as a control. Test tube 1 containing a blue test strip. Test tube 2 with lime water used as a control. Test tube 3 with carbon dioxide being sucked through lime water. Pump used to suck the combustion products from the candle through test tubes 1 and 3. In the next installment of the Daily Announcements we will showcase the last emissions experiment where students discovered that excessive amounts of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere are expected to have serious consequences for global temperatures. ONLINE VISIT WITH THE TURTLES AT THE ECHO MUSEUM The Voyagers in 4th, 5th, & 6th grades, and Discovery students in 6th grade, held a google meet conference with a staff member of the Echo museum. During this visit students learned about one endangered species of spiny soft-shelled turtles that live and breed only in the northern part of Lake Champlain. It is estimated that just 300 exist there in their wild habitat. The two classrooms of students were online with the Echo instructor at the same time and students from both groups got to ask questions they had about the turtles. What do they eat? What is their habitat like?, What are the animals and human behaviors that threaten the turtles? How long can they stay underwater? How many eggs do they lay and at what stages of their life cycle? How long do they live? The staff member prefaced all these wonderful questions with a viewing of a turtle aquarium and a chance to see an adult soft shelled turtle being transported by hand by another staff member. The half hour session proved to be interesting and information packed. Only a few questions remained unanswered but the Echo staff member was able to direct students where to go online to learn what they wished to know. Link to 17 Pictures.
