PART 3 OF A GREEN HOUSE GAS STUDY CONDUCTED BY 5TH GRADERS

In the previous experiment, 5th graders learned that burning petroleum produces at least two green house gasses; water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO2). The next question of interest became… why should we be concerned about greenhouse gasses?

Ms. McLaughlan from the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP) came to our school and organized an experiment to test whether or not higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could cause the earth to heat up.

In the picture below, students are writing down what they guess will happen in the experiment and why before they conducted it.

Students were paired at stations that had the following items: one 500 Watt heat lamp (acting as the sun), two soda bottles with black rocks in the bottom (acting as the earth), one thermometer for each bottle, one flask filled with 100 ml of water and a stack of seven large antacid tablets. The antacid tablets were added to the water in the flask - causing a production of carbon dioxide that was directed into one of the two bottles. The goal was to note the temperature in the bottles every minute for 10 minutes when the heat lamp was turned on above them.

What students learned was that the air above the rocks in the bottle receiving the carbon dioxide increased much more in temperature over 10 minutes than the bottle without the carbon dioxide. This finding indicated that the the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, settled above the rocks in the bottles and trapped in heat. An identical effect occurs in the air above us as carbon dioxide accumulates there from the burning of fossil fuels. This experiment made concrete the effect of this green house gas on our living environment.

In the upcoming weeks we are going to see if any of the 5th grade students have ideas about what we can do to minimize carbon dioxide production at our school.

One magical fact about Ms. McLachlan’s visit is that she asked all the 5th graders names once and with almost no errors talked with students by name as she worked with them during the experiments throughout the day. Her name recalling ability for the 60+ studets made the lesson-learning-process much more powerful.

TENNIS INSTRUCTION IN THE GYM

Once again guest instructors came to St. Albans City School to teach basic tennis skills in an inviting way. Students practiced hitting balls into buckets and volleying back and forth with each other. Controlling the ball was the focus of Monday’s lesson. It was clear that students were having a good time with the tennis lessons. Link to 7 Pictures from Renaissance.   Link to 8 Pictures from Incredibles.

TRAVELERS 1ST GRADE SCIENCE LESSONS

Ms. Culligan taught her students about underwater volcanoes and about solids, liquids and gasses. Check out these two 1-minute long video clips provided by Ms. Bessette.

Get to know celebrated Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg—in the first picture book about her life—as she proves that disagreeing does not make you disagreeable!

Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has spent a lifetime disagreeing: disagreeing with inequality, arguing against unfair treatment, and standing up for what’s right for people everywhere. This biographical picture book about the Notorious RBG, tells the justice’s story through the lens of her many famous dissents, or disagreements.

From the New York Times bestselling author of I Dissent comes a young adult biographical graphic novel about celebrated Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a modern feminist icon—a leader in the fight for equal treatment of girls and women in society and the workplace. She blazed trails to the peaks of the male-centric worlds of education and law, where women had rarely risen before.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has often said that true and lasting change in society and law is accomplished slowly, one step at a time. This is how she has evolved, too. Step by step, the shy little girl became a child who questioned unfairness, who became a student who persisted despite obstacles, who became an advocate who resisted injustice, who became a judge who revered the rule of law, who became…RBG.
