IT IS MAPLE SUGARING SEASON AGAIN

Our H.O.P.E. (hands on practical education) staff member have been reaching out to the younger aged students to familiarize them with the process of sugaring. On Monday morning at 10:00, Ms. Brogle's students worked with Mr. Hoben and Mr. Deslauriers to tap the large maple tree in their playground. They drilled a hole into the tree and then pounded in a spout. Sap began dripping out of it immediately. A bucket and lid were attached to the spout and those students will check the bucket daily for sap. Many other trees will be tapped around the property by other students.  Mr. Hoben and Mr. Deslauriers will begin boiling sap soon in the school’s sugar shack. Link to 22 Pictures.

TROUT UPDATE - FROM MR. ROULEAU - TEAM USA

The trout have been set free from the net that was protecting them until they filter.  When they were smaller they did not have the strength to not get sucked up by the filter.  Now they are big and strong enough.  They tend to instinctively be near the rocks for protection from predators as they blend in and out of the stronger current in a stream.  Some hover near the top when they are hungry looking for food.  They are about 1-2 inches long right now.  Link to 9-second Video.

FROM THE LIBRARY

As many of you know, Ms. Levine often has posters that students can participate in completing. Hundreds of stickers need to be placed on these posters in order for a the poster picture to reveal itself. Here is the latest completed poster.

Please save the date for a community conversation to help the Maple Run Unified School District to be more successful for all students.

Last fall, we held a series of community listening sessions where we spoke with over 90 students and 60 community members. We want to share the priorities we heard and shift the conversation to action steps. We want to hear your input on how the school district should move forward and what the next steps should be.

Thank you!

The author of Mesmerized delivers another fascinating glimpse into history, this time the story of two brave suffragists on a trek across America to spread the word: Votes for Women!

In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The women’s suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayers—not to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mud—the two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause.

Congresswoman Barbara Jordan had a big, bold, confident voice—and she knew how to use it! Learn all about her amazing career in this illuminating and inspiring picture book biography of the lawyer, educator, politician, and civil rights leader.

Five billion years ago, a starship passing through our region of space would not have slowed down for a second look. There was nothing to see. No Earth, no sun, no solar system. Nothing but a huge tenuous cloud of gas.

Now, as the result of billions of years of evolution, and centuries of scientific research, we can chart our way through the solar system . . . with Sally Ride as our navigator. Starting from the sun and working outward, Sally Ride and Tam O’Shaughnessy take readers on a tour of the nine planets and explain the formation, current conditions, and possibility of life on each.
