NEWS AND PICTURES

CLEAR THE HALLS DRILL

Late Wednesday morning, the school held a clear the halls drill. When alerted, everyone returned to their assigned classrooms and offices in quick order. The drill was considered a success. 3-15-2023.

STEAM FESTIVAL

Over the course of a month, our school built up excitement for the STEAM festival scheduled for Tuesday evening, March 14th. Unfortunately, a major snow storm arrived on the day of the event and we all wondered if it would ruin the festival. Amazingly, it did not. Families showed up in droves. We estimate several hundred families came and many stayed for the full two hours that the festival was held.

Even though the Echo museum STEAM staff were not able to attend and help out (impossible to get their truck here through the snow storm), our impressive makerspace staff had still organized plenty for the students and their family members to do. Multiple creative stations were set up and managed by adults throughout the cafeteria and the big gym. Families moved from one station to another, trying to experience them all. Students carried around a paper to collect stamps from each station and when they accumulated eight, they could enter a raffle for one of at least eight STEAM prizes. It was nearly impossible to try out all the activities at the many stations before the evening ran out. There were far more than eight stations.

Many pictures were taken during the event and the better ones will be shared in the coming school days on the announcements. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped out on a snowy winter evening.

WALKING WEDNESDAY REPORT

In February, the Walking Wednesday event was canceled due to extreme cold. Therefore, this March 15th, we were determined to hold Walking Wednesday in spite of the very snowy conditions. We hoped that as long as a few dozen students came out the event would be a success. Fortunately, at least 52 students and 12 adults braved the weather. We are especially grateful to the Walking School Bus leaders who drove from far out of town on slippery roads to assist with the event.

The water bottle raffle for walking participants will be conducted Thursday and reported in Friday's announcements.

Only a few photos and one video clip were taken of the walk.  Link to a 13-second video clip.

TWINS

Please save the date for a community conversation to help the Maple Run Unified School District to be more successful for all students.

Last fall, we held a series of community listening sessions where we spoke with over 90 students and 60 community members. We want to share the priorities we heard and shift the conversation to action steps. We want to hear your input on how the school district should move forward and what the next steps should be. Thank you!

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in history.  Take a look at the collection of books that you can find in our library!

Here are today's highlighted books...

In November 1960, all of America watched as a tiny six-year-old black girl, surrounded by federal marshals, walked through a mob of screaming segregationists and into her school. An icon of the civil rights movement, Ruby Bridges chronicles each dramatic step of this pivotal event in history through her own words.

Rosie may seem quiet during the day, but at night she's a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) comes for a visit and mentions her one unfinished goal—to fly—Rosie sets to work building a contraption to make her aunt's dream come true. But when her contraption doesn't fly but rather hovers for a moment and then crashes, Rosie deems the invention a failure. On the contrary, Aunt Rose insists that Rosie's contraption was a raging success. You can only truly fail, she explains, if you quit.
