PICTURES AND NEWS

IMAGINATION 3RD GRADE - KOLDYS

After finishing their breakfast, Ms. Koldys’ students participated in a mentally stimulating go-noodle movement exercise. This experience was followed up by math instruction in small groups. Those who did not leave the room to learn with Ms. Dean were photographed at work. Link to 26 Photos.

DREAMERS KINDERGARTEN - DEDELL

Ms. DeDell and her staff worked with the students to practice their reading skills. They rotated between a number of stations, some of which were playtime oriented. Link to 15 Pictures.

INVESTIGATORS 2ND GRADE P.E. - WIGHT

Students had a great time running around the gym playing tag. There are a thousand variations of this game and students never get tired of playing it. Those who were tagged by the two designated taggers were freed by having a hula hoop passed over them by Ms. Wight. Link to 13 Pictures.

WALKING WEDNESDAY IS TODAY

Please join us on Wednesday on one of seven supervised routes to school. Those who check in at the sign-in table will be entered into a raffle to win a metal water bottle.

Please note the expectations for joining a walking school bus route:

  • Students are welcome to participate if they follow instructions given by the adult leaders.

  • Students may not pass and run ahead of the adult leading the walking group.

  • Bicycles, scooters and skateboards do not mix well with walkers. Please find a way to go separately or go with a parent and ride well away from the walkers on the route.

Thank you

CLIMATE COMMITTEE WHOLE-SCHOOL GOAL FOR MAY

Our goal is to have more people ride the bus or walk/bike to school during the month of May.

Please join us each Friday in May when we walk/bike/bus to school. You can also go on your own. Classroom teachers will check off who walked, biked or bussed and those students will be entered into a raffle for school store coupons. In addition, at the end of May, those students who bussed or walked/biked will be entered into a raffle for a gently used bicycle.

There will be two teacher-led groups you can join on Friday if you want company walking to school. One will start at the fountain at Taylor Park (Mr. Marrin & Ms. Draper). The other will start near the basketball court at Houghton Park (Ms. Bashaw & Ms. Chisholm). Both will leave promptly at 7:00 AM and arrive at school at 7:25. Come to the parks at 6:55 AM.

THE LORAX VISITED TO PROMOTE WALKING & BUSSING FRIDAYS

On Tuesday, May 2nd at 12:30 PM, the Lorax, Mr. Marrin and Ms. Draper dropped by the cafeteria to ask students to consider joining walking and bussing to school on Fridays. The message was well received. Link to 14 Pictures.

SUMMER FOOD ASSISTANCE

Vermont will be issuing a final round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits for Summer 2023. All students at our school qualify for a Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 per student. This is because of the way that we are offering free school meals to all students this year.

The benefit will be sent to the head of household and mailing address that we have on file for your student. If you have moved or need to update the head of household, please let us know by Wednesday, May 10th. To make changes, please contact Jennifer Seymour at Jseymour@maplerun.org

These benefits will be sent out by mid-August. If your student missed school for a COVID-related reason between February 2023 and May 11, 2023, you will receive benefits for those days at the same time.

Please see Frequently‐Asked Questions (FAQs) About School Pandemic EBT (P‐EBT) for more information. If you need to request a new card or have more questions about P-EBT, visit https://dcf.vermont.gov/esd/P-EBT or call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7.

LIBRARY

Curious about Audio Books at St. Albans City School, then check out THIS LINK

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!  This month celebrates the unique journey of all AAPI immigrants and citizens in the United States and their unique life experiences, traditions and cultures.  Look for these books in our library to help you honor and celebrate the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent.

I dream with Popo as she rocks me in her arms.

I wave at Popo before I board my flight.

I talk to Popo from across the sea.

I tell Popo about my adventures.

When a young girl and her family emigrate from Taiwan to America, she leaves behind her beloved popo, her grandmother. She misses her popo every day, but even if their visits are fleeting, their love is ever true and strong.

Prairie Lotus is a powerful, touching, multilayered book about a girl determined to fit in and realize her dreams: getting an education, becoming a dressmaker in her father’s shop, and making at least one friend. Acclaimed, award-winning author Linda Sue Park has placed a young half-Asian girl, Hanna, in a small town in America’s heartland, in 1880. Hanna’s adjustment to her new surroundings, which primarily means negotiating the townspeople’s almost unanimous prejudice against Asians, is at the heart of the story. Narrated by Hanna, the novel has poignant moments yet sparkles with humor, introducing a captivating heroine whose wry, observant voice will resonate with readers.
