PICTURES & NEWS MAKERSPACE INTERN PRESENTATION IN BURLINGTON On Wednesday May 31st, six makerspace interns in Grades 4 - 6 attended the Clean Water Summit in Burlington Vermont as the Keynote presenters. In December of 2022, this group of students had worked together to develop an inquiry project about our local community. Students wanted to investigate the closure of St Albans Bay during the summer and ways that we might protect Lake Champlain. As a group they decided to use makerspace tools to create an informational campaign that would encourage people in our school community and beyond to care for and protect the Lake. Working as individuals or in groups the students created different methods--from t-shirts to a website--to share their learning. The culmination of their investment in this topic resulted in St Albans City School being asked to share our learning in front of 200 students from nine middle and high schools in Vermont and New York. The students did an amazing job on their engaging and thoughtful presentation. They also had an opportunity to sail on Lake Champlain, participate in water monitoring and fishing lessons. Their message was spread even further when they were invited to participate in a local news station interview as a result of their presentation. We are very proud of these students and their investment in going above and beyond in their learning. Way to go! BUSSING, WALKING, BIKING, SKATEBOARDING, SCOOTER RIDING RAFFLE WINNERS Five donated used bicycles were raffled off to five students who rode the bus, walked, biked, skateboarded, or scootered to school on a Wednesday or Friday in May, 2023. There were several large bikes and three considerably smaller ones to give away. The winners are listed below. Thank you to everyone who participated in the climate change challenge to lower pollution from vehicles traveling to school. Imagination 2nd Grade E.S. Explorers 3rd Grade. S.B. During a battle one night in the war of 1812, the Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott key. The kids were very curious about this event, and asked to look up a video of the Star-Spangled Banner one day. This turned into a curiosity about the states and we decided to learn all 50 states in the 50 nifty United States song. It has been a favorite fun way to start literacy each day. June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. During this month-long celebration we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who fight to live freely and authentically. In doing so, we are opening hearts and minds, and laying the foundation for a more just and equitable America. Please check out these books in our library today to learn more about people and characters that represent our diverse community! Long before marriage equality was the law of the land, two grooms stood on a wedding cake with their feet firmly planted in fluffy white frosting. That cake belonged to Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, who were wed on September 3, 1971, becoming the first same-sex couple in America to be legally married. Their struggle to obtain a marriage license in Minnesota and their subsequent appeals to the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States is an under-told story of LGBT history. Obie knew his transition would have ripple effects. He has to leave his swim coach, his pool, and his best friends. But it’s time for Obie to find where he truly belongs. As Obie dives into a new team, though, things are strange. Obie always felt at home in the water, but now he can’t get his old coach out of his head. Even worse are the bullies that wait in the locker room and on the pool deck. Luckily, Obie has family behind him. And maybe some new friends too, including Charlie, his first crush. Obie is ready to prove he can be one of the fastest boys in the water—to his coach, his critics, and his biggest competition: himself. |
