Medicine Safety

On Monday, Hailey, Jonathan and Matthew did a wonderful job of representing Mrs. Richardson's first grade class while presenting a medicine safety lesson to our Kindergarteners. They taught the Kindergarteners that 1. Only grown-ups touch medicine, 2. There are medicines made just for kids and medicines made just for grown-ups, 3. Children should never take medicine made just for grown-ups, and 4. Even a medicine made just for kids can be dangerous if too much medicine is taken or if it is taken at the wrong times. Then the 1st graders shared medicine safety posters that they had made for the kindergarten classrooms.

News from Team USA

Wednesday, 4/4/12 - Team USA students noticed that they were able to pickup unsecured Internet connections from our neighbors.  Dylan and Hunter visited our neighbors on Finn Avenue to track down the wireless connections.  They found two families that needed to protect their connections.  They discussed the issue with both families and explained that the wireless networks should be protected with a password.  They also provided directions about how passwords could be set up.  Team USA would like to remind anyone with a wireless network to make sure they are secure by setting up a password.  The Superheroes would like to commend Dylan and Hunter for taking the time to help our neighbors.

Dental Health Fair for Learning Communities 1-3

Our first Dental Health Fair was a huge success. Each 1-3 Learning Community was able
to visit five stations to learn about dental health. The following stations were available for all students:

Heather Blair, Dental Hygienist with VTC clinical students provided a tooth brushing lab. Each student left with a toothbrush, toothpaste and important information about tooth care provided. Megan Peek, Blue Cross Blue Specialist, Community Outreach specialist, provided an interactive experience matching the amount of sugar in various beverages. Students were surprised and left knowing the impact on their teeth. Jill Goodroe, Vt. Dairy Council and Sean McManus , Blue Cross Community Outreach specialist, provided the opportunity for every student to help to make smoothies using the power of pedaling the bicycle. Dr. Chuck from Fiddlehead Dentistry provided engaging conversation and illustration about Oral Hygiene and Nutrition.

This day was made possible through lots of collaboration, planning and hard work on
behalf of the following people and teams:

Team USA provided a large portion of their physical space to allow for this opportunity. They were flexible and staff and students deserve a lot of credit.
Abbey Group for fixing healthy snacks for students to try. The assortment of vegetables were colorful and students enjoyed them.
Melissa Habberman, Art Teacher for having the students create four
wonderful posters that labeled the sessions. Meagan, Abigail, Juliana and Danielle. Georgie Andrews, Nurse Morgan, Wendy Trainer, Joanne Chambers, and our custodial staff who helped in many, many ways.

A very special thank you to each person who helped with this venture especially to

Team USA welcomed another distinguished guest to our Leadership Series.  Ms. Joan Cavallo spoke to our community about her leadership experience.  She shared her background as a leader in the business and education world. She also shared her vision of what school should be like and how far St. Albans City School has improved in the past few years.
The video is in production and will be shared once available.

Thank You

A Special Thanks goes out to the Kwaii Origami group.  This is a group of 7th grade students who create and sell origami and other goods for special causes.  The group held a bake sale at the March 16th Dance, and donated the proceeds of nearly $50 to the Class of 2012 to use toward the cost of producing the Yearbook.  The Yearbook Committee would like to give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to the group for their hard work and generosity!

Behind The Scenes with "The Phantom Tollbooth"

We asked Mrs. Jarvis about what needs to be done to produce the play, and who helps out:

"This year we have had many people working on production. Mrs. Haberman and one of her art classes designed and made the beautiful back drop. Open Doors did a "Back Stage Pass" and this class made many of the props. Our Drama Mamas, (Mrs. Walsh, Mrs. Newton and Mrs. Grubb) made the sets and gathered the costumes. The PTO gave us a large grant to be used toward this production, and we have recently learned that the St. Albans Society for the Performing Arts has also  given us a grant towards our efforts here."

You are invited to see the play Friday 3/23 at 7:00pm and again Saturday 3/24 at 2:00pm.
