Veterans Day

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
By: Katherine S.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to the services of an unknown soldier. An unknown soldier is someone who is unidentified after dying in war, mainly Word War I. The monument is a military monument, or grave stone, that has been dedicated to unidentified American soldiers that gave their lives in battle. Each Veterans Day the president lies a wreath on the Tomb. Everyday since 1937 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and in any weather by Tomb Guard sentinels. The changing of the guard is very symbolic, but it’s also conducted accorded to Army regulations. When a guard is being changed the relief commander or assistant relief commander has to be present, when the public is witnessing. Before the ceremony, the commander will inform the public that the ceremony is about to take place and asks that those present should remain silent and standing throughout the entire event.

News from The Learning Commons

We are sorry to share the passing of our friend the axolotl, Smeagol, who died early Sunday of an infection, despite the excellent care of Mr. Mike Mandeville, and Dr. Elizabeth of Essex Veterinary Center. Smeagol was approximately 4 years old  and was a gift of Mrs. Borst’s aunt. He was beloved by most, and even met the Commissioner of Education for the state of Vermont.
He enjoyed being read to, hanging out in his tank, boiled chicken, and hiding under his log.

Here is a picture of him in happier times.
