UPDATE ON KINDERGARTEN MONARCH BUTTERFLY EXPERIENCES

NAVIGATORS - LAWYER   Ms. Sally Lawyer had a student show her the power of learning about butterfly metamorphosis years ago: the process of caterpillars changing into butterflies. Consequently, she and the other kindergarten (and some PreK) teachers have been making learning about butterflies an annual component of their curriculum. Normally, these teachers purchase and hatch painted lady butterflies. This year Monarch butterflies are the focus, as there are plenty of chrysalis outdoors in or nearby the school's greenery. The judgement has been that moving the chrysalis to protected areas within their classrooms ensures they don't get trampled or damaged before butterflies emerge and are released.

A few days ago, Mrs. Lawyer had the presence of mind to video students who had just observed a monarch butterfly emerging. They had started singing the metamorphosis song they had learned earlier on in the school year spontaneously.

These pictures came from Ms. Sarah Brooks

NAVIGATORS - LAIDMAN  Ms. Hailee Laidman's PreK & K students were photographed releasing their butterflies. Ms. Asato-Ditch shared the pictures.  LINK TO 20 PICTURES

DREAMERS - WILLIAMS  Ms. Kathleen Williams has also had her students engaging in learning about butterflies and metamorphosis. She kindly shared these pictures of her classroom releasing a butterfly into the wild. LINK TO 10 PICTURES

STUDENT-LED DAILY WALKING SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM
LINK TO WALKING SCHOOL BUS MAP AND TIMES. There are three routes.

Thank you to everyone who has been coming out to support this program. It will run daily through Thanksgiving. We have observed that the Messenger Street and Elm Street routes have been well attended, although the leaders would welcome even more walkers. The group that comes from the Barlow Street community center has not encountered as many students and they would definitely welcome greater participation. It feels nice to enjoy the fall weather and socialize with fellow students on the way to school. Come be a part of something special.

Families, please note this important point: These are students leading students. If you feel uncomfortable about entrusting your child(ren) to a student-led walking school bus program, then we ask that you have them continue to ride the regular bus or drive them into school. This program is aimed at increasing the number of kids walking carefully to school each day.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS

You don't need to drive to Colchester! Bring your kids to downtown St. Albans. The Vermont Youth Orchestra Association (VYOA) is presenting a "Rug Concert" in St. Albans at the First Congregational Church on Sat Sept 28th 1:30 to 3:00 PM. The Rug Concert is a program that introduces instruments (oboe, trombone, viola, and piano) to young audiences. Designed for children ages 0-5, it's also fun and entertaining for slightly older children and adults! This is a FREE event, generously sponsored by the VYOA.

Location: First Congregational Church of St. Albans in the fellowship hall
27 Church Street, St. Albans. (Enter by driveway between the Courthouse and Church, use entrance off parking lot)

Subsidized youth instrument lessons associated with VYOA may also be of interest. LINK TO INFORMATION about those lessons.

St. Albans City School continues
with the 50th Birthday Celebration

In 1970 Mrs. Lamb was a 7th-grade student here at City School. She remembers a time capsule being placed behind the 1968 stone during the school dedication ceremony. After some research, we did confirm there is something behind the 1968 stone.

We will be removing the time capsule this fall. The contents will be revealed 50 years later during Unified Arts Night on February 20, 2020. Put the date on your calendar and join us for UA night and more 50th Birthday celebrations!
