Announcements for Thanksgiving Break

THANKSGIVING BREAK
Wednesday - Friday, November 25th - 27th.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

November 24, 2020

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

We hope your families are doing well and looking forward to a relaxing time together. We will not be in session Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for the Thanksgiving Break. We will be back in school on November 30th, and we will be bringing back the 5th and 6th grade to 4 days a week starting December 3rd. We are still not fully staffed, but we are doing our best to meet the needs of all of our children.

When we return from Thanksgiving Break, we will continue to check temperatures before students load the bus in the morning; however, we will be moving temperature checks inside for walkers and drop-offs. To accomplish this we will have all 4th-6th grade and 7th-8th test stations in the vestibule nearest their pod. Prek-3rd grade will have temperatures checked in the classroom as students enter. This is necessary as the temperatures get colder and our thermometers have more and more error readings. This video will describe how we deal with error readings or high temperatures.

As the cold weather takes root and classrooms have more students in them, we are also finding a way to provide a safe environment for Physical Education. At this point, many students never see the hallways. Our pods are very tight, and students remain in their classroom with their pod only. This has been very helpful and exceeds the guidance set by the State. When we return we will have a PE room for 1st to 3rd grade on the first floor, and a PE room for 4th-6th grade on the second floor. Students will follow a specific route, led by teachers. We also have strict procedures in place to maintain the integrity of our bathroom pod design. We believe this small change will provide easier access to movement and still keep students safe.

Finally, we had a positive COVID case this week. All of those that were affected have been contacted. We will continue to have cases. We will also continue to practice mitigation procedures. By remaining diligent to our procedures, wearing masks correctly and consistently, staying in our pods, remaining 6 feet apart as much as possible, and washing hands, we can continue to keep our school family safe. Also, we must stay home when we feel sick - even if in past years we would not have done so. For this holiday break please remember that the Governor has ordered that anyone traveling or attending multiple family gatherings will be required to quarantine for 2 weeks. We need our families to support us in keeping our school family safe and our school open.

We wish our school family a safe and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday.

Our School Community is Raider Strong!

PAJAMA DAY (11-24-2020)

Quite a few learning communities or individual classrooms chose to make the day before Thanksgiving break pajama day. Staff and students came dressed in pajamas. Here are a few images from around the school.  Learning communities can share more pajama day pictures with the announcements if they wish. Send to mcraib@maplerun.org

DISCOVERY SCIENCE - KUTKA

Students in two different pods (classrooms) mixed several liquids (vinegar & cabbage juice) and various solids (tums, alka seltzer, honey, sugar, bread, banana, tea, cinnamon) together to see what would best neutralize acids. Prior to this step, they had a lesson and discussion on human digestion and the purpose of acids and bases found throughout the digestive system. Once they had an essential understanding of how food is processed in the body, students were asked to consider what kind of commercial or home remedies work best for dealing with excess stomach acid, e.g. a cause of the commonly experienced “heart burn”.  11-24-2020. Careful observation and classroom discussion led to some great learning. Link to 28 6th Grade Pictures.   Link to 34 5th Grade Pictures.

ADVENTURERS STEAM CLASS - RANKIN

Ms. Rankin brings STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and the Arts) into PreK and Kindergarten classrooms on a regular basis. On Tuesday, 11-24-2020, Ms. Darcie, as the students call her, had Ms. Farrell’s students use art supplies to create birds that would fly with a homemade wind tunnel. The 34 pictures linked here show the creation of the flying objects and how the flight system looked like when each child got to test their creation out. Everyone had a chance to return to their seats and make upgrades to their work before flying it a second time.  Link to 1 Minute of Video Clips
