THE SPRING WALKING CONTESTS
BEGAN MONDAY - May 6th

They will run for 4 weeks and there will be two ways for a learning community to win.

1. Have the highest Walking Wednesday participation rate over 4 weeks
2. Accumulate the highest total of laps around the walking path over 4 weeks

1st place prize in each category will be 1 hour of pool time on June 17th.
2nd place prize in each category will have an hour of fruit smoothie bike time on June 17th courtesy of RiseVT.

There is no 3rd place prize.

There will be walking trinkets distributed to students who accumulate very large numbers of laps around the path.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COLOR OF THE SHOE TAGS ARE RANDOM AND NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY PARTICULAR LAP NUMBER. It is the number of tags you wear that indicate how many laps you have done.

Clipboards with walking path tally sheets have been distributed to all 1st-8th grade learning communities that are committed to competing in the walking path contest. An adult in each community will have to verify all laps and tally the results for their team on Fridays. All tally clipboards and sheets will go to Ms. Bashaw on Fridays by 2:45 PM.

MOVE UP DAY
Parents and Families of 8th Graders

On Friday, May 24th, 2019, your eighth grader will be taking a bus to BFA for Move Up Day. This is an annual event to introduce eighth graders to the expectations associated with their upcoming ninth grade year. This is always an exciting day. BFA staff and students will be on hand to guide the eighth-grade students through the orientation program. Additionally, it is an opportunity to meet fellow eighth graders from the other sending schools.

Lunch will be provided by BFA. Your eighth-grader will be dismissed from BFA at 2:00 P.M. and will be walking home from there.  If you choose to do so, you may pick your child up at BFA at that time. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact your eighth-grade learning community or contact school counselor, Allison Goldsmith, at agoldsmith@maplerun.org or 527-0565 ext. 3874.

PICTURES AND REPORTS

RENAISSANCE eCYBERMISSION REGIONAL COMPETITION WINNERS NOW MOVE ON TO NATIONALS
The eCybermission team of Ella Howe, Heather L'Esperance, Genevieve LaClair, and Molly Smith just heard that they qualified for the national eCybermission competition in Washington D.C. (5-9-2019). They will depart for the competition on June 16th and return on the 21st. Their science project focused on how different types of plant fertilizers can impact the quality of water flowing into Lake Champlain. No students at St. Albans City School have advanced this far in eCybermission competition previously. We congratulate these students for their fine work.

VIRTUAL REALITY EQUIPMENT

St. Albans City School has acquired a set of delicate virtual reality equipment. The equipment allows the wearer to move around virtual locations and environments. In this case, the student was exploring the Eifel Tower in Paris when photographed. The makerspace staff will let us know soon how we can experience the use of this wonderful new equipment.

EXERCISE BEFORE SBAC TESTING
Winters are really long here and there are too many days when temperatures, the wind, and icy conditions keep students inside during recess. When May arrives and the grass and leaves spring forth, there is a huge pent up demand to get outside and move. Here are pictures from Thursday morning just prior to SBAC testing. Some teams were completing walking laps for one of the walking contests. Other teams were allowing free play which meant kickball, gaga ball and use of the playground equipment.  LINK TO 25 PICTURES
