THE SPRING WALKING CONTESTS
BEGAN MONDAY - May 6th

They will run for 4 weeks and there will be two ways for a learning community to win.

1. Have the highest Walking Wednesday participation rate over 4 weeks
2. Accumulate the highest total of laps around the walking path over 4 weeks

1st place prize in each category will be 1 hour of pool time on June 17th.
2nd place prize in each category will have an hour of fruit smoothie bike time on June 17th courtesy of RiseVT.

There is no 3rd place prize.

There will be walking trinkets distributed to students who accumulate very large numbers of laps around the path.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COLOR OF THE SHOE TAGS ARE RANDOM AND NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY PARTICULAR LAP NUMBER. It is the number of tags you wear that indicate how many laps you have done.

Clipboards with walking path tally sheets have been distributed to all 1st-8th grade learning communities that are committed to competing in the walking path contest. An adult in each community will have to verify all laps and tally the results for their team on Fridays. All tally clipboards and sheets will go to Ms. Bashaw on Fridays by 2:45 PM.

MOVE UP DAY
Parents and Families of 8th Graders

On Friday, May 24th, 2019, your eighth grader will be taking a bus to BFA for Move Up Day. This is an annual event to introduce eighth graders to the expectations associated with their upcoming ninth grade year. This is always an exciting day. BFA staff and students will be on hand to guide the eighth-grade students through the orientation program. Additionally, it is an opportunity to meet fellow eighth graders from the other sending schools.

Lunch will be provided by BFA. Your eighth-grader will be dismissed from BFA at 2:00 P.M. and will be walking home from there.  If you choose to do so, you may pick your child up at BFA at that time. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact your eighth-grade learning community or contact school counselor, Allison Goldsmith, at agoldsmith@maplerun.org or 527-0565 ext. 3874.

Middle School Peer Leadership Three day camp
July 15, 16 and 17, held at St. Albans City School from 8AM-3PM.

Students entering grades 7 and 8 in Fall 2019 are invited to join our Peer Leadership program,
Student Empowerment for Equity and Diversity (SEED), formerly known as AWOD.
Students on this team meet weekly to learn together and to plan and teach activities in grades
6-8 to address bullying, bias, and equity.  All students who complete the training will be
included in a peer leadership group throughout the 2019-20 school year. The group is
co-facilitated by Jamilah Vogel, School Counselor, and Alan Salit, Team USA Special Educator.

This program is being offered free of charge, and busing and lunches are provided. To register
students can pick up a registration form in the School Counseling office, or
email jvogel@maplerun.org for an electronic copy.
What we will learn:

  • Language and vocabulary related to equity and anti-bias
  • History of inequity and civil rights
  • Facilitation and leadership skills
  • Public speaking
  • How to be an ally

Registration is open now through the end of May.  Registration is limited to 20 students.
There are currently 16 spots left.
Students interested in this group but unable to make it to the three-day camp please come talk
to Ms. Jamilah.

PICTURES AND REPORTS

KINDERGARTEN NIGHT
Parents and upcoming kindergarteners came to St. Albans City School on Tuesday night, 5-7-2019, to register their children for kindergarten, fill in immunization records and learn about the kindergarten program. The PreK/Kindergarten staff were present as well as many of the school's administrative staff. There were blue blocks and other toys to keep kids entertained while parents dealt with paperwork.

WALKING WEDNESDAY RESULTS
Although temperatures were in the 30s on Wednesday morning, 181 people walked or biked to school. One hundred and sixty-six students and 15 adults made up the group. Team Triumph had the best turnout with 24 people. This turnout places them firmly in the lead for the Walking Wednesday pool party on June 17th. Excellent work! If any team plans to beat Triumph by the end of the month, it will have to have a really good turnout next week.

Take note of the PreK/Kindergarten group participation rate. It is impressive that students this young are coming out in these numbers to walk to school.

SHOE TAGS DISTRIBUTED
Imagination students were kind enough to count out batches of 100 toe/shoe tags to be delivered to each learning community. Thank you. They were distributed in zip lock bags on Wednesday morning 5-8-2019.

INCREDIBLES SOLAR OVENS
Students in the Incredibles community built solar box ovens. These are small insulated boxes with a transparent lid and a reflector to direct sunlight into the boxes. In larger solar box ovens it is possible to reach temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit, high enough to easily cook food. These pictures were taken on Monday 5-6-2019 which was a beautiful sunny and warm day.  LINK TO 12 PICTURES sent by Ms. Coutts.
