THE SPRING WALKING CONTESTS
BEGAN MONDAY - May 6th
They will run for 4 weeks and there will be two ways for a learning community to win.
1. Have the highest Walking Wednesday participation rate over 4 weeks
2. Accumulate the highest total of laps around the walking path over 4 weeks
1st place prize in each category will be 1 hour of pool time on June 17th.
2nd place prize in each category will have an hour of fruit smoothie bike time on June 17th courtesy of RiseVT.
There is no 3rd place prize.
There will be walking trinkets distributed to students who accumulate very large numbers of laps around the path.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COLOR OF THE SHOE TAGS ARE RANDOM AND NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY PARTICULAR LAP NUMBER. It is the number of tags you wear that indicate how many laps you have done.
Clipboards with walking path tally sheets have been distributed to all 1st-8th grade learning communities that are committed to competing in the walking path contest. An adult in each community will have to verify all laps and tally the results for their team on Fridays. All tally clipboards and sheets will go to Ms. Bashaw on Fridays by 2:45 PM.

PICTURES AND REPORTS
NURSE POSTER CONTEST FOR 1st and 2nd Graders Here is a writeup from Kate Laddison, an NMC hospital employee and a parent at St. Albans City School.
Each year, Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) celebrates Nurses Week from May 6-12. Part of the hospital’s celebrations include a poster contest involving students from one or two schools in Franklin County. Students are asked to illustrate what nursing means to them, and their artwork is hung in NMC’s Courtyard CafĂ© where staff vote on their favorites. When the winners are chosen, NMC nurses get to visit the school and share information about their profession.
The artwork is an incredibly welcome “thank you” for the hard work and dedication of NMC nurses. This year’s batch of drawings from St. Albans City School was phenomenal!
Deanna Orfanidis, VP, Chief Nursing Officer at Northwestern Medical Center stated, “It was an honor to visit St. Albans City School, on behalf of NMC Nursing. The students responded with enthusiasm to a Q & A session related to professional nursing. It was fantastic to reach out to the community and share in celebrating National Nurses Week.”

ROCKS IN OUR FIELDS - A REAL PROBLEM We want to enlist all students to help keep rocks next to the sidewalks and not in the fields. In recent weeks, many dozens of rocks have been tossed into the grassy areas beside the sledding hill and the playground. These rocks become dangerous missiles when the lawnmower hits them, and the lawnmower hits rocks every time the grass needs to be mowed. Check out this 1-minute video to get an idea of how bad rocks can be for a lawnmower and people's safety. Our lawnmower is 10 times more powerful than the one shown in this video. LINK TO VIDEO |
